Looking for new bb provider

just come off the phone to VM retentions and basically told them to cancel my contract for everything

so I am now looking for a good BB provider, previously i was with Sky on their 8 meg BB but never reached more than 2-3 meg. I am thinking of going back with sky on their 16 meg package

After doing speed tests on the local exchange it comes back that the maximum speed that the exchange can output is 5.6meg

this being so how can sky advertise up tp 16 meg when the exchange to be routed through is only capable of 5.6meg output

are there any other providers recommended capable of 8 meg upwards out there on an ordinary phone line????

Re: Looking for new bb provider

Sky are advertising packages with "Up to speeds", ADSL speeds depends on many things including distance from exchange and line conditions. If you were close to the exchange you would see towards to the top end speed of each package.
The exchange is capable of the speed, your line is either too long from the exchange or not in a good enough condition to hold a higher speed.

Re: Looking for new bb provider

I had BT ring me up trying to persuade me to take their BB package. She asked me who my provider was (o2) & what download speeds I was getting (I currently get about 5 to 6 on an 8MB service using ADSL2+). She then tested my line & said they could offer me 4MB ! She wondered why I wasn't interested.

Re: Looking for new bb provider

You can't get as fast as Virgin Broadband i'm afraid in your area.

Have you tried TalkTalk, they are an LLU provider, also if you take out line rental with them, you can get free unlimited calls to anyone in your area, in other words number begining 0161 and 01204 ect...

If not then its just Virgin Media.

LLU or DSL max - he will still end up with about 5mbit/s (unless they put a repeater in or upgrade his line with gold or summat...)

its all down to the price ... or the speed...
