BT will upgrade all customers to 20mb will Virgin upgrade people too?
There is a report that BT Internet will upgrade all customers to 20mb at no extra charge.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8081226.stm
Do you think Virgin will upgrade all customers as well to better speeds. Or will we be stuck with the current speeds.

So that basically means that BT will be operating on a usage based system rather than speed - which I thought people didn't want?!

Monthly limit of 10-20gb, wonder how fast that will get used up - especially with iPlayer and stuff these days :p

I think its still good that a company is willing to upgrade speeds,. virgin should do that, instead of making the basic tier 10mb and most people on that all paying different prices.
If BT can upgrade speeds virgin should too as its a cometitive market.
Say 10mb, 20mb, 35mb, 50mb...something like that would be better

The are 3 tiers at the moment 10Mb, 20Mb and 50Mb and you are more likely to get the speed you pay for with Virgin than you are with BT.

Not sure where you've been, but VM have upgraded customers speeds over the last few years, often with no or an insignificant price increase. All BT appear to be doing here is following the lead that VM set many months ago.

I'd guess it means BT would upgrade all customers to 20Mb if they had the systems in place, which won't be for some forseeable future!

BT are comparing apples with oranges. With their service, yes you can download at 20 meg (usual restrictions like distance and line quality apply) but you are also capped and they use Application Throttling.
Virgin do charge more, but they don't throttle individual applications, although they do throttle your connection when you get above a certain amount each day. Even if you stick within the limits, you can download a *lot* more than you can on BT, and if you go over the STM limits, you can download many times what BT cap you at.
It's also worth noting that BT will be actively spying on your browsing habits using Phorm.

And it is still distance related being ADSL2+. Even being on the outskirts of Nottingham, I would have no chance getting 20MB versus VM (currently on 10MB and get 9+ all the time). Traffic shaping on the way for all?

It's not a competitive market in the slightest, and the 10/20/50 levels Virgin have will be fine for now.

Nope not usage based just a speed upgrade to coincide with the 21CN migration to ADSL2+.

Re: BT will upgrade all customers to 20mb will Virgin upgrade people too?
But if they offer all customers the same 'up to' speed, then the only differential will be usage?!

Re: BT will upgrade all customers to 20mb will Virgin upgrade people too?
That will not be complete until shall we say, 2019?
Very long wait!
By then, Virgin Media may have expanded to 80% of the population and may be owned by someone else!
They are just dreams! BT and its customers need to wake up and smell the coffee!
