SamKnows maps broadband speeds.
I've often recommended this very good broadband site..
As you may or may not know the government has pledged thst every UK citizen will have access to broadband speeds of at least 2 meg.
Samknows.com has produced a map that shows exactly which areas need work to provide an average speed of 2 meg..
http://www.broadbandperformance.co.u...bilitymap.aspx
Apparently, the map is not yet finished. Phase 1 is complete, but they still have several phases to go through.

Hey Stuart C,
Thanks.
This will help new people about this site. I used this site my self and it was a big help from leaving VM going to a ADSL service. etc

Re: SamKnows maps broadband speeds.
Strange - my street shows several dots with ADSL at less than 2Mbps.
VM is available here at 50Mbps - so I don't think its a totally fair representation.

50Mbs VM? Didn't know they used ADSL for that...

This data is based on which Telephone Exchanges have capacity for Internet connectivity. Approximately 4,079 homes are connected to Exchanges that are not ADSL enabled.

Re: SamKnows maps broadband speeds.
My street (or any near by) does not have any dots, but apparently the exchange is over 2Km so looks like VM is the only real option there.

Re: SamKnows maps broadband speeds.
2KM as the crow flies or by road? If by road you can get ADSL speeds up to a point, if it's as the crow flies you may as well forget it for now.

Err 2km crow flies is well within range unless the line takes an exceptionally long route. Highly likely to be >2Mbps as a minimum.

Re: SamKnows maps broadband speeds.
The accuracy of the map does seem questionable. The two blue markers showing as nearest to me are on an access road through a large grassland area and there are at least half a dozen or more of the same...less than 2Mbps...... markers within yards of the exchange building.

Distance isn't the only thing that affects ADSL speed.

Agreed but the whole point of the map is showing places where you can only get less than 2Mb - or are they totally going to ignore the cable service which offers faster speeds? If they are, then the map is a little pointless.

Re: SamKnows maps broadband speeds.
I think I would be quite ticked off if I lived in sight of an exchange, had checked to see what I could get and being informed that it is able to give connections from all the major suppliers, then found that I couldn't get 2Mbps.

Which is exactly what the map shows. It shows areas where ISPs (on average) are underperforming, and will hopefully persuade those ISPs to do something about it.
