Any way to find out what speed ADSL I could get?

My Virgin broadband is now so slow as to be unusable during peak hours, and despite months of me trying to get them to fix it they have never done anything about it.

I've been looking into ADSL as an alternative, but as I have a Virgin phone line there seems to be no way to find out what speed DSL I could get. (all the online checkers I've seen seem to require a BT phone line) Is there any way around this?

Thanks.

You need a BT type phone line for ADSL.

As Paul says, you need BT for ADSL (or DSL). Virgin's phone network does not have the correct hardware.

Re: Any way to find out what speed ADSL I could get?

For ADSL you will need a BT Line. The samknows site posted by cimt will give you a good indication of what ISP's you can get from your local exchange.
If you can get either BE or sky, you can try and input your post code into their web page to see roughly what speeds, the exchange should be giving. But these will vary depending on distance and line quality. The guides are a rough guide.

You will need to initialy pay for a new line installed £125, but it could be worth calling BT as I did, as there was already a socket connected to my flat, and all they had to do was activate it their end, so connection was free.

Always worth a call to see what is on offer.
