This is about average. A standard ADSL line can theoretically carry up to 8 Meg, but some of this will be lost. Similarly with ADSL 2 LLU lines. These can theoretically carry up to 24 meg, but you will lose some.

The only thing that worries me about O2, is the fact they want me to install software that comes with modem. It doesn't fill me with joys of spring..

Not too sure about O2, but Be also supply a software CD. It is only really required when you connect to the router via USB (you will *not* see the full ADSL2 speed on this as it is a USB 1 device).

You don't actually have to install the cd, you can set up within the router by browsing to 192.168.1.254, O2 wireless box II, Set Up

The Current bebox doesn't have USB, the CD is only really needed for the firmware upgrade wizard.
I believe it's the same with o2 as far as I know the cd isn't needed to set-up the service.

Re: o2 Broadband
I've been with Be for about 6 months, ever since Bulldog completely moved across to Pipex. Had a couple of days where we've had a few hours of DNS issues, but apart from that it's been smooth sailing.

Are you on Be or O2? Be usually manage you for about a week to see how your line performs. If you are with Be you can then ask them to change your SNR and also put you on fastpath. This should squeeze a nother couple of meg out of your line. Not sure if you are with O2.

What are your line stats?
You do also know speed tests are not a reliable source for testing speed.

Re: o2 Broadband
So then... How can I reliably test to see if I am getting what I pay for?

Re: o2 Broadband
I'm guessing you have just come from cable to dsl?
Try plugging your o2 box directly into the BT test socket. Locate the master socket, unscrew it and plug your filter in behind and connect your o2 box, then try a speedtest. By doing this you are isolating your household extensions and eliminating any chance of them losing some mb's.
I have a filtered faceplate from ADSL Nation and a disconnected ring wire to rule out any interferance from my household wiring.
