BT banned connection to Rapidshare
Friend of mine down south just told me that his BT connection has banned all traffic to and from Rapidshare. When did they start doing this?

Re: BT banned connection to Rapidshare
I've heard rumors its actually rapidshare blocking large ISPS to cut down their bandwidth costs.
Of course BT will say its not them and Rapidshare will say its not them.

Re: BT banned connection to Rapidshare
I have noticed I can't connect to RapidShare on someone else's BT connection.
Always says 'This page can not be displayed'.

Re: BT banned connection to Rapidshare
Checking again, I can gain access to RapidShare during certain times of the day, but not others. So I don't quite know what's going on.

Because certain rapidshare servers block connections to both BT,UKO,SKY And VM.
It's a bandwith control thing, they only block when congestion is high.
It's nothing to do with BT.

Alright.
How ever, I've never noticed disconnections/blocks from my VM connection...and I download a hell...hell of a lot more during peak times, etc.

It's only certain servers, it's very hit and miss just lately.
Most of the RS servers are fine however.

Re: BT banned connection to Rapidshare
This relates to Cleanfeed which BT and a number of other ISPs use (VM not being one of them).
The Internet Watch Foundation supplies lists of dubious URLs to ISPs which run the Cleanfeed service. Rapidshare no doubt has its' share of kiddie porn. When a site is added to the list the IP address of the server it is hosted on is routed through a Cleanfeed proxy, so you get the usual proxy effect from Rapidshare.
The issue is that Rapidshare don't use the X-Forwarded-For header that proxies give to websites, if they did they would see the IP addresses of the clients, as it is they only see the Cleanfeed proxy.
Either Rapidshare can start trying to sort it so that people don't use their service to hold kiddie porn, or they can start reading the X-Forwarded-For header.
I consider Cleanfeed to be a perfectly acceptable and well implemented solution, sadly if Rapidshare aren't interested in reading a simple header there's not much that can be done. Cleanfeed helps reduce child abuse on the Internet and functions in a standards compliant way. Rapidshare are being lazy, and have been for years.
Conspiracy theories over I hope, it's what I mentioned above, that's all, nothing to do with blocks to lower bandwidth bills, BT intentionally blocking people or whatever else

Actually it's known fact that RS block certain ISP's when network congestion is high, they always have.

Re: BT banned connection to Rapidshare
I never could connect to rapidshare on my BT line (for over 2 years) at my previous address, every other site was fine.. megaupload etc.
Playing the everquest MMORPG they used to give rapidshare links for patches(mirrors) I could never get them so a friend had to upload them on another site for me.
Then when I moved to my current address (same pc) & intially had a BT line installed (before getting VM as I lived too far from the BT exchange to get a stable connection) yet on the BT line I could use rapidshare.
Very strange problem.

Rapidshare connection issue work around
I have a work around if anybody is interested.
This work around only applies if you have the link to the file your are trying to get, for example the http:// code.
All rapidshare links look like this: http://rapidshare.com/files/????/?????
What you simply do if you are having connection issues like I do, Rapidshare always comes up with "Internal Server Error 500" for me or it times out so what I do is this,
You simply type the first part of the code like this: http://rs240.rapidshare.com/files/
after /files/ you put the rest of your code to your file usually numbers forward slash then another series of numbers or letters or a combination thereof.
This is simply a direct way of getting to the file you want without going through the website and clicking free user or premium user. This work around has been working for me and I hope it helps you.
