Distance to exchange

Hi all

In another thread i was saying how I'll be soon moving from vm and is still true now.
I'll be joining bethere and was wondering how do i find out how far away i am from the bethere exchange so i can get a figure of what sort of speeds I'll be getting once I'm with bethere please?

This is a useful site, as a guide you can multiply the straight line distance by 1.4

Cheers for the link m8 but how do i find how far away i am from the be exchange as i can't find no distance stats on that website?

It says I'm Direct: 2.17 km
(appx)* By Road: 2.74 km so what sort of speeds am i looking at for bethere on say there 24 meg package?
10-15 mbs? seeing how I'm 2 km away from the exchange?

Just read this from the bethere helpage.
It says anything upto 15 mbs which for 18 squid is gret imo

And some tweaking i might get 20 who knows

The actual bandwidth that you will receive is based on the following factors: the length of the wire that connects your premises with the BT exchange, the quality of the copper, and environmental issues which include electrical interference and even sometimes bad weather and the distance you live from the exchange. If your line is two kilometres long then you can expect to receive up to 15 megs (dependent on the above circumstances). Your bandwidth will decrease further as line length increases, and we do not offer our service if you are further than 5.5 kilometres from the exchange. While bandwidths are not guaranteed, we do offer the highest bandwidth available using ADSL2+ to your premises. Be pro members will receive a download speed of up to 22 megs, but an upload speed of up to 2.5 megs. Be value members will receive a maximum speed of 8 megs, and a maximum upload speed of 1.3 meg.

Hard to say, without any line stats, but at a guess I'd say about 10Mb. If you have any previous line stats you can remember, try the menu beneath the last link I gave.

You said in your last post, your distance was 2.74km, so having fiddled with the speed checker, I'd say it's around 10Mb.

Very,

I live approx 2km from my exchange and when I was with VM adsl I struggles sometimes to get above 120k.

I'm now with sky and I get on average 500k

ADSLMax - up to 8mbit, ADSL2+ - up to 24mbit, VM - less than dialup.

Same as me.

roughly 22mbit (tho mine is sacraficed so i can get full 2.5mbit upload)

As the crow flies I'm 900m from the exchange.

10meg is the best I can get from BePro. Seems it's just the luck of the draw what sort of line you've been saddled with.

yes as well as what route the actual line takes, if its me giving the advice I would tell anyone with a direct distance of over 1km they have a significant chance of speeds below 8meg, at 2km direct distance there is a large chance greater than 50/50 of speeds been below 8meg and certianly below 10meg. Going on ofcoms law of averages the direct line distance would work out at 2.8km which would give a at best line attenuation in low 30s but more probable in 40s, if the line cabling is particurly poor it can be quite easily be in excess of 50db. A attenuation in low 40s on a line with low noise will give you a 10meg synch but I wouldn't tell people to expect it as the odds of them not getting it is too high.
