Re: maximum distance

If it's ADSL you probably need to be relatively close to the exchange to achieve the top line of the speed. Do you know how far from the exchange you are by road?

If you go to http://www.samknows.com/broadband/checker2.php
and after entering your details, click on BT ADSL. Here you should find details of what speed you can expect from BT's ADSL Max (8meg service). I assume this should be the same for an 8meg sevice from anybody.
As for ADSL2, if for instance you can receive 6meg from a 8meg conn on Max then you should get (75%) 18Meg from a 24meg conn.
Well in THEORY anyway.

Re: maximum distance

1.75 if using ofcoms calculated average actual to direct then your full line distance would be about 2.45 and attenuation would be approx 30-40db which should give you a full 8mbit and pearhaps 10-12mbit on adsl2+ but with that straight line distance it can easily be worse if you got crap cable on your line or if the line is routed poorly.

The best you can expect to see on a 'full 8 mbit' line is about 6.5 mbit. The top BT ADSLmax profile is 7150. Then there's overheads.

Re: maximum distance

I am talking ATM rates not TCP.

Jonathan90 ofcom reckon over the country the average line length vs direct distance is 140% so I used that as a basis for your actual line length and then guessed what the attenuation would be from that.
