Is it worth getting a new line?

I am currently with Be and sync at 18.2mb with a SNR of 5.5 on average. My attn is 18.5db but i have seen higher attn with higher syncs.

I can manage 19mb sync on a SNR of 1.5.

The line coming into my house is not that good. It enters a junction box where 1 wires shoots off somewhere under the floor and I cant see it and another 2 wires leave the first junction box to another junction box. From there one wire leads to a socket that does not even have a test socket.

Would it be worth getting BT to put a new line and master socket with a test socket in?

If you are getting decent speeds what is the point? Do you have a problem on the line or are you just looking to get "perfect" numbers? I can't seer BT putting in a new line AND master socket for no reason (although having worked for them I know that a master socket is prefered where possible).

your not going to get much better than that unless perhaps you were to stick your Modem/router on the Connection block for the DSLAM.

I have seen better stats then that like attn of 13db

Its possible, i was just saying 18mbit is a good connection speed, espcially when a lot of people can't get anywhere near that


Heres my stats, although im not on ADSL2+ just ADSL.

SNR Margin

Down: 11 Up: 22 dB

Line Attenuation
Down: 8 Up: 6 dB

Data Rate

Down: 7616 Up: 448kbps

^ annoying that even though i sync at 7.6mbit the bras profile is set at 6.5

Pity cus i lose a whole megabit cus of it

Wander what sort of speed id get once adsl2+ does roll out... (anyone know when BT are gonna roll it out?)


Problem is if you get a new line put in theres no gunrantee the pair you get will be as good as the one you have now!

What section of the "wiring from the pole" are you worried about? If it's the drop wire then you will need to show BT/ whoever that a fault is occuring (noise on line etc) if it's the cabling within premises then you will again have to prove a fault for BT/ whoever to look at it. If you want to PAY BT to re-wire your line then I would expect it to run something close to £200 and you will have to book an engineer to come out and do it.

The price would depend on what work was needed to be done and I would expect it to start around the same price as a new line install which is £125. BT recently put their prices up for installs Like I said, unless you can prove a fault to BT.......

I think you are been a bit **** taking to be blunt, 18.2mbit is a incredibly good synch and I have rarely seen higher, its so rare its the reason why a few isps are marketing adsl2+ as upto 16mbit as thats a more realistic max good lines will see. Also for the sake of 1mbit on top of 18mbit which you will rarely see on tcp throughput its even more of an argument to not bother.

Better justification is for people with "actual" bad lines with synchs below 8mbit and stability problems.

Considering I cant get BT to admit a fault with a dodgy 4meg synch I would be amazed if he could do that on a 18mbit synch, BT should charge him so they can spend time on bigger problems.
