Do they allow self install ?

Hi all
new to the Forum, joined in the hope that this would be the place to find the info I seek. I'm about to make the jump to VM, TV Phone & BB. what I require is breakdown of what hardware they install, other than the obvious V+ Box, where they expect to site it and why, plus a wiring diagram.
do they allow self install or will they supply cable prior to install for the customer to run. can anybody help with any of these issues as VM dosen't seem to be able to, not a great start!.
Great site from what I see so far.

Hi, for new customers installs are always manned.

They will usually be happy to install the modem and set top box where ever you want in the house.

Re: Do they allow self install ?

Self install has typically only been available to customers moving into a property that already had a cable service. In those cases the cable wiring should already be present and it would simply be for the customer to plug in the VM supplied TV Set Top Box, and / or cable modem.

Where new cabling is needed VM will always want to install themselves. This will be taken care of as part of your signing up for a 12 month contract. Sometimes there will be an installation fee, dependent on the services you require.

The problem for customers wishing to run their own internal cables is the quality of the co-axial is generally much higher than standard TV aerial or even satellite cable, as it needs to support a 2-way data path. Additionally if cable ends are terminated incorrectly that can degrade services. Normally one also needs to get the new wiring checked so that signal levels wil be in tolerance as cable resistivity can change with length.

It is best to get the install done by VM's techs. If you make alterations or get it wrong you would pay the price for VM to sort it. Perhaps the best workaround, where people seek to be careful of routing cables is to speak to the installer when they arrive and encourage them not to clip the cables to skirtings (normally they are run surface fixed inside a home), and to leave a little excess length. You would then be able to pull the cable though floors and such like after they had left, knowing that the cable itself will work correctly.

Re: Do they allow self install ?

I am happy for VM to mke the installation what I would prefer to do is run all the cable prior to that, that is why I was asking for info regarding what hardware they instal and just where they prefer to position that. Do they pick the BT wiring. Are there any diagrams of any kind relating to VM installations available.

Re: Do they allow self install ?

VM will run their own cable at point of install.

They will not touch the BT cables either they aren't allowed to really.

VM stopped issuing cable for self install, Coaxial cabling used by VM are RG6 and RG59 with solid dielectric

BT owns wiring up to the Nte5 master socket, wiring to any extension is the property of the house owner and can be connected to VM's Master socket.
