Of course you can Dark Light, I would be happy to help. PM me your adress and postcode and any details and I will look into it for you as soon as possible.

I can confirm that we have checked weesteev and he is on the VM staff.

Any update on what happened with this? I know someone in the area who would be very interested to know if there is any movement.

It is not possible to get cable connected, as of November 2009, however it would be nice if something has changed.

Does anyone know if anything has changed with getting streets connected, hasn't BT opened up there ducts now and I heard that VM is now (or will be) running the cables overhead.

not as far as I know. VM are doing a small trial of overhead cable, but it would need a change of government policy to allow them to use this further than the test area.

Re: Not In A Virgin Media Area, Is There Anything I Can Do To Get It Connected
No BT havent opened their ducts and neither have Virgin. Its not quite as simple as the media would have you believe. Most of BT and Virgins network is bespoke (i.e designed to requirements) so there isnt spare duct space.
All access duct that feeds properties from street side cabinets is designed as to the requirements of the network at that time, extra duct isnt lying unused as some would have you believe. Core network is different but providers dont need to duct share of longer distances as they tend to have infrastructure in place already and its usually cheaper to rent long distance infrastructure than it is to place new stuff in the ground.
DF is correct though, overhead cables (aerial deployment) is purely under trial at the moment and it will be some time before we see anything further on this one I would imagine.

So, in essence, it's going to take years for BT to open up their ducts. Even if they co-operate (which going on past experience, is not a given), they may still need to survey each area. That's not to mention how long it'll take VM to do whatever they need to.

I think you'll find once a cable is pulled through a duct, no alternative supplier can pull a cable through that duct. I just had an interesting job where the developer put a duct in to the footpath boundary, but because BT put their cable in first, we couldn't pull a cable through that duct. What makes it worse, the area is telegraph poled, BT could have strung the line from the pole, and left the duct free for us. ho hum.

This happens more often than you would believe!
But your also right, a single duct is designed for a single transmission cable.

Then how do all the other VM areas get connected?
Also with the FTTP trail, is VM using Single or Multi Mode cables, just out of interest.

All of Virgin Media's access network is underground.
As for the trials, I cant publicly comment, not that it will make any difference as its the same product being delivered regardless of HFC or FTTP. In my opinion its all a bit of a media frenzy for nothing really, will be better when services are launched that can actually benefit from FTTP.

I'm going to be moving soon into a non-VM area although it's not far away from an area which is enabled. Is there somewhere to contact about it as moving to Sky would be rubbish! It's a CB25 postcode near Cambridge.
