Well, I'm stumped [Connection = No Connection. What?]
My other half's parents decided to cancel their AOL subscription and sign up for Virgin fibre optic broadband with wireless router (Netgear).
The guy's came to install the fibre connection but forgot the Wireless router which was delivered the next day, but not installed.
I installed the wireless router, set up their computer with the correct SSID, the (supplied) WPA key and connect to the network with a USB wireless adapter (will supply model when Im at the pc).
Great. It say's its connected to the correct virgin broadband network, signal excellent et all but the supplied Virgin network connection software say's it was unable to connect to the router and won't let me go any further in the process.
I tried bypassing the software and setting up the connection the windows way. Still lets me connect, but no internet and no connection to the router. Apparently.
I get out my iPod touch, enter in the ssid and security key and bingo, I'm in. I can surf, connect to routerlogin.net and confirm that the pc is among the attached devices but still nothing on the PC.
HELP! I don't know whats happening here and they're thinking of switching back to AOL if it doesn't work soon.
I can do an cmd/ipconfig copy and paste tonight when I'm there if that will help. The IP assigned to the PC was like 192.168.1.4

Re: Well, I'm stumped [Connection = No Connection. What?]
I thought modems were delivered pre-registered these days? Anyhoo, turn the cable modem off, disconnect from the router and connect directly to the pc. Give it a few minutes and then power the modem back on again. You can now either:
a) Run the supplied CD and it should find the connection
b) Navigate to the setup page which I can't remember off the top of my head but hopefully someone will remind us.
Basically, the modem needs to be registered. Until then it's on limited profile only and can only get to the registration server.

Try this link as it should work, ignore that I put set up for MAC as it works the same on any PC.

Re: Well, I'm stumped [Connection = No Connection. What?]
Fantastic, thanks for the help guys. I'll try these tonight.
Regarding the registration of the modem, would it still work fine via the iPod touch if it wasn't registered? I could connect to the router and surf fine through the iPod but the PC refused to connect to anything. Despite being fully "connected" to the network (not limited).
It's as if something was conflicting with the connection, refusing to recognise that it is indeed connected.
I just spoke to my s/o's mum and she's booked an Engi to come look at the system May the 7th. I've got til then to sort it before they grow so frustrated that they switch back.

Sorry - I'd missed the fact that the touch could actually surf - I just saw that you could get to routerlogin.net. My bad. Ignore my advice!

Re: Well, I'm stumped [Connection = No Connection. What?]
That's ok, I appreciate any suggestions and help at the moment!
I tried Moldova's advice and still nothing. I connected the computer to the router with an ethernet cable and it still won't let me gain access to the router settings (via 192.168.1.1 or routerlogin.net), but I can still access it via the iPod.
I reset the router and still nothing. It says it connects fine via the USB adapter to the correct network but all browsers refuses to connect.
Tried all combinations of unplugging/plugging in modem/router/pc and still nothing.
Turned off all firewalls, antivirus and completely removed AOL software and still no connection.

Check that your PC is not set to a static IP address.
Go to control panel > Network Connections >right click on wireless adapter > Properties > TCP/IP ....... in here check that IP adress and DNS are set to automatic.

Also, check what anti virus they have running, might be worth just disabling it whilst you problem solve. I have seen many times before AV's stopping a connection.

I've uninstalled all spyware removing software, disabled AVG from running at startup and removed most Norton software (as it was out of date and redundant anyway) but there's still some Norton AV software stuck on there and it won't let me remove it.
I think I've disabled it from running at start up anyway but it would be good to remove it completely just in case.
I've contemplated just deleting the Norton folder in Program Files to remove it but I'm sure there would still be some files left somewhere as it would not be "properly" uninstalled.
How else can I safely remove all Norton software if it won't give me the option in "Add/Remove Programs" or any uninstall option from the start menu? I've looked for an uninstall file in the Norton folders but found nothing.
I'm going to try the wireless USB reciever in another laptop and see if I can connect with that. If I have the same problem then I think I can safely say it's the USB adapter and not the PC.

Re: Well, I'm stumped [Connection = No Connection. What?]
Thanks guys, I'll whack em on a USB stick and take them to the problematic pc.
I tried the USB wireless receiver on a laptop and it worked fine so it can't be that.
I'm going to uninstall the driver software on the PC and reinstall it to make sure the right driver was installed. When I installed it on the laptop there were lots of different wireless adapter driver models to chose from and I'm thinking that maybe she installed the wrong one.
If the driver for a slightly different model of USB wireless receiver was installed would it still semi work?
That could be why it's picking up the signal, saying it's connected but not actually connecting?
