Moving Modem

Hi , I wonder if anyone can help ?
I have just had my old set top box replaced withe the new Samsung STB, It wouldn't connect up to my computer (not connected Message ) so the Virgin Engineer Ordered up a separate Modem . He said the instalation Engineer would run Co- axial cable outside and into bedroom with the modem next to PC .Fine . When engineer arrived he said he could only fit it next to TV and split the signal at the side of TV with the all the cables and linked into existing network cable . Everything works but I would still like the Modem upstairs . Question Is it feesable for me to run a co-axial cable from the splitter up the wall using correct cable (is it RG6 ) and not get VM to do it ?. As it is the cables are a mess and if i go wireless it will be worse The engineer left rapidily before I could get him to tidy it all up. I did complain to Customer Services as yet not heard anything
Regards Martin

Re: Moving Modem

Sounds to me like the engineer couldnt be bothered to do a job that would require a little bit more work.

Extending the coaxial cable yourself can cause problems to you and your neighbours and could affect your speed too.

If possible, you would be better to leave the modem where it is and instead buy some ethernet cable and run that from the modem to your computer.
This is cheap. I get mine from here:
http://www.cableuniverse.co.uk/catal...ex&cPath=23_31

You can run up to about 100 metres of this without any problems.

That is how it is working at the moment .( Wired with cat 5 cable ) It's what will happen if I do as the first engineer said and ran about twelve mts of coaix up the wall into beroom

Re: Moving Modem

To be fair to Virgin there are cost's involved in moving connection points. Standard charge for this is £75. Complaining about it the engineer 'not tidying up your wires' is a bit daft, it his not his job to do your housekeeping.
You have a working modem in the same position as before and that is all that Virgin are really obliged to do for you.

The cheapest method will be to do it yourself although there is no real performance need to move it at all.

martin, standard installation practice for set top to SACM broadband migration is to do exactly as the engineer did, this obviously keeps down the cost of VM paying the contract partners to do the initial enet cabling then having to pay them to run a co-ax in the place of the enet cable.fact is,your modem will be much more stable now than your set top for your INET connection

Thanks guy's for all your replies. First off
1 Tidying up my cables .... engineer installed 2mts of extra cable with limited amount to position the modem that is with 3 mts already in the corner of the room .Tv is there as well its like a sea of snakes . I just wanted the length kept to a minium plus a service loop ( I didnt think that was a lot to ask )
2 I initialy paid for C%W to install broadband into rear bedroom with ethernet cable , Fine they didn't use sepate modems so made the instalation quite neat and quick going in to the loft space and the wall .
As i see it ,VM have now produced a STB that doesn't support this connection, Engineers words not mine . It has to be done with seperate modem ,to which i think is great no more problem with box and broadband ,Its never been this good i would like to add
,so all I want is the modem to be next to the PC where it belongs , and no flashing lights below the TV there is not enought cable in the Y junction to move it away from the STB
Now if Virgin supplied ther own leads with there ends on ,say .5m 1.0m 2.0m we could tailor the wiring to our own requirments without invalidating there equipment and 75 quid charge
Or could the engineer have 5 min extra to dicuss with the customer what they want and where .After all in my case this is my home and I pay £360 a year rent on this equipment and all I want is a say where all the cables go
Lastly I think this Cable Forum is great and my Thanks go out to all those Knowledable People that answer our Problems Cheers Guys
P.S. Acording to customer Services an engineer is coming out next week to repostion the modem at no cost to us ! watch this space

Re: Moving Modem

The poor engineer probably had loads of other jobs to do that day in order to get paid his minimum wage.

I think I see whats happening here , Cant you see its not his standard of work I am questioning but the standard that VM is pushing or the sub's working on behalf of them, that is forcing them to cut corners to get the job done in an allocated time and an absolute minimum of materials used . I am sure Richard Branson wouldn't want his cables strewn across his carpet where he can see them . So why should I
VM as i see it are now in the service and repair industry and not the instalation service and every job must be treated on its own merits .
Any way back to the plot do they still use RG6 cable at £16 for 100m I cant see them using PF100 or the like at £30+

If i wa to do as this tech has done and you put a complaint in against me my manager would have my b***s yes we all cut some corners in are jobs but we are told to do what the customer asks and if its any different to the order we get it amended so we get paid

Or get to know an installer and ask him to do it on the side

Re: Moving Modem

personally id chuck an extended on the coaxial, extend it where to where you want it and hey presto done.

I know, I cant be bothered to f*ck around with the VM CS they are just dam right stupid and something is bound to go wrong. Moral to the story, do it your self. Works best, things get done better and to your standards!
