STB as Modem

Hi,

Does anyone know if it's possible to use the Samsung VBox as a cable modem?

Currently I have a STB n one room and modem in another but I've moved the house around in the years since the broadband connection was installed. The modem (and router) is now in a pretty inconvenient place and the STB is in the ideal place for both broadband and TV.

PS. sorry if this has been discussed but I tried to search and there is a minimum word length of 4 letters!? So pretty much STB and set top box were out the window...

Thanks in advance.

it is possible to still use it but company policy these days,in areas that used to exclusively install broadband thro the set top, is to now install set top for broadcast and modem for broadband connection,i think you may find it difficult to revert but,in answer to your question, yes, its still a possibility

Re: STB as Modem

The earlier STBs could only handle 1meg broadband, and the later Pace and Samsung only 4 meg. Unless your needs are limited the modem is the only option.

Simplest thing is to put a splitter by the STB location, and connect the modem there instead of via the current lead. But if you DIY this be very careful about the quality of the cable and splitter. Get it wrong and you will degrade your service, and perhaps your neighbours. Strictly speaking customers shouldn't mess with the cables on the street side of any modem / STB. If in doubt, it will cost, but get VM to relocate it.

bit of a contradiction there rob, advising the simplest thing to do is:... then advising him not to do it!! then telling him to get VM to do it,no wonder VM subs are lost and confused stick to digitalspy.com rob.

Ok thanks for that.

In that case is there any way to split incoming cable without getting an engineer out?

It's a shame you can't daisy-chain the devices.

Oops started replying before you posted!

put simply rob,no.if you want VM to take care of any future probs/faults you need to let them install and then maintain it for the life of your contract.be aware though rob,if you make any changes to the config of the wiring or positioning of the equipment and you suffer probs which prompt you to request an engineer visit then any extra cabling/positioning of equipment over and above the original install would incur a call-out charge if found to be the problem causing the fault

Re: STB as Modem

To be honest I'm happy with the modem, I've had it for maybe 5 years or more and it's useful to have the status lights on the front.

Out of interest I may at least investigate a splitter and then I can weigh up the cost comparison of splitter vs moving the incoming cable.

Where might I find such a splitter?

Thanks by the way.

Thanks. Actually have a voucher for Maplins that I've been waiting to use!

Any idea of the cost of a call out?

Jamie

standard initial installation charge is £30.if you ball about with it afterwards and make a mess a tech call-out is £30,any rewires are charged at £75,like i said m8,leave it to em,when it goes wrong it costs you nout for a call-out then

Re: STB as Modem

Good advice, I think I may just leave it as is.

Cheers for the quick help and advice.
