Install issue

Hi all,
My daughter had a modem installed at the weekend (after i told her everything would be fine, and not to listen to the bad press) saturday the installer turns up she tells him that ideally she wants the modem at the other end of the room (but no power point there) so can he site the modem at the entry point, and run an ethernnet lead to the other end - answer, "no don't carry any long lengths of ethernet" so instead he adds about 15ft of coax - but pretty useless as the modem power supply can only reach a couple of feet.
Also he took no signal levels with a meter, and most worringly of all didn't fit an isolator - which i know they should.
Anyway the end result is that when iexplorer is clicked nothing happens no Virgin page comes up as per instructions, (although modem is blinking away so must be sending/recieving) also no CD left by installer & told by cust' serv's that they don't need it anymore? (she's in Redhill RH1 area not sure if thats ex-TW or ex-ntl?) as i'm sure that ex-TW still needs a CD.
After several calls to cust' serv's they say that it can take up to 24hrs to start - is that true? (although its gone 48 now)
Questions are...
Should i complain about the isolator?
Do you still need a CD?
Is RH1 ex-ntl or TW? i.e. is a CD needed? as the PC (Vista) does not see the modem at all?
Does it take time for liven up the modem?
Which contractor does Redhill area - I do know a few, so could ask them?
Total install time around 15 - 20 min's!
Let me know what you think.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Install issue

Yes there should be an isolator, but that might not be where you expect it. For example is it on an external box?

The installer will only have the standard length of ethernet supplied with the modem, typically only a metre or so length. It's not their fault if you don't have a power point near where you want the modem. Surely though there would be one nearby because of the computer

And as for the CD, no you shouldn't need one. Indeed it's always been possible to connect without one, unless you were trying to use USB.

The modem should have been active virtually staight away. If the sync and ready lights are on then chances are it is. You just need to follow the registration procedure using the details the installer left, or VM previously sent you. You may need to power off the modem and computer to get it to fully recognise each other's existence when you reboot.

Ill answer what I can to the best of my knowledge, Im sure someone will correct me if I am wrong.

If you complain, I am pretty sure not much would get done - so that may be a waste of time and energy.

You will not need the cd if ethernet is used, however you will have to type the autoreg page into internet explorer. (I can not remember the full url, but someone will know and post it for you)

The modem takes around 30 seconds to "liven up" Ideally you will have a solid Sync and Ready light.

Re: Install issue

Thanks guys, it is a laptop hence the power point issue, and yes it is ethernet.
Followed exactly the letter (which mentioned putting a CD in) but to no avail.
(although i can get an ex-TW or ex-ntl CD easily enough)
If anyone knows the url it would help greatly?
Cheers

Re: Install issue

try http://activation.virginmedia.com

If that doesn't work you may well need to call VM broadband faults. It will cost to call, but if the problem is due to VM's setup that would be recredited to you.

Re: Install issue

Thanks guys that seems to have done the trick (esp your bit esdxc37) much obliged.
Shame that two days of bad customer experience had to be endured, and that it was this forum came up the solution.
Cheers.
