Anonymous caller bypass
For some time now Ive had Anonymous caller reject, but over the years Ive found more and more companies are bypassing it with a fake number.
This week, I got a Anonymous caller with a number "000000" and another which shows as "/" on all my displays. They were both companies trying to sell something.
So why cant Virgin media do something about this
No point in telling the TPA, without a number you cant say who they are. Someone somewhere must know the real number

Re: Anonymous caller bypass
It should be up to Ofcom to enforce callers with to be anonymous or to display the calling number

Re: Anonymous caller bypass
I thought it was illegal to present an invalid number.
Unfortunately Virgin can't do anything. A number IS being sent, even if it isn't valid.

Re: Anonymous caller bypass
The easiest way I've found of stopping all sales calls in their tracks, is simply to use an answerphone!

Yes they can, they are invalid numbers, there are no numbers in the world like this, and im sure it would be easy for them to block them, if only they would get up of there ar$ and do something

They are mostly from oversea, so unless they can get VM to block them, they cant enforce anything out of this country.

That is the biggest problem. Virgin (and others who offer the same service) can only legally guarantee that the ACR will work within the UK
Not all countries have a CLI service, or if they do not all of them work the same. So International Calls cannot be barred from reaching your line

Re: Anonymous caller bypass
International Calls have been barried on my line, I gave my number to a friend in Canada, while im sitting waiting for the phone to ring, he told me he got a message saying "something about his number withheld"
He added his number and the phone rang, sisplaying his number in full with Canada STD
Today I rang Virgin media, they say they are doing everything that can be done, The End !
There is a big difference between a international number and a fake number like 00000 I just feel they just dont want to do anything that migh cost money to get it working

Re: Anonymous caller bypass
That happened because the US and Canada have compatible CLI systems (as does most of Europe), and Virgin can be confident that they are passing correct details
However say the call is coming from either Africa, South America or Asia, from a phone network that doesn't support the CLI we use (or has none at all). Virgin can't block those calls

Re: Anonymous caller bypass
Im sure they can, lets face it on BT they have a system where you need to put in a number, and they reject all other calls. That would cure this problem.
Same with spam, AOL have a buddies list we dont, how easy would it be to delete all those thosands of emails and just let through those you list.
Oh well, perhaps the future may bring along something better

Re: Anonymous caller bypass
Just an FYI, if the calls you're receiving are business/marketing/sales then you can always ensure that you're registered at www.tpsonline.org.uk .
Also, occasionally if you receive silent calls from weird numbers it can sometimes (although rarely) be a fault with a test number somewhere on the network.
AFAIK, for the number to come up as 00000m the number presentation would have to be working/compatible, otherwise you'd just get "unavailable" up on the phone. Most companies that setup call centers abroad use VOIP to route calls in and out of the UK and filter their calls through UK Landlines(no nasty expensive international calls that way). Eitherway, if a company has marketing or sales business with you in the UK they should be covered by the DMA/TPS.

You mean like a whitelist feature that most email apps have

I've not heard of that service from BT. I know they do 'Choose to refuse' which means you can specify a couple of numbers NOT to receive calls from, but AFAIK they don't do the reverse?
Can you link to a BT page that details that service?
