Dial tone

I have just taken out Virgin phone and BB, which is due to arrive tommorow. As there is no dial tone now do i just phone up to activate everything tomorrow and then it should all start working? How long does this normally take as i have Sky coming Thursday PM.

Thanks

If I understand correctly southwell, you have the the connections already in place from a previous contract? If so you will not have to activate anything, that's down to the engineer when he comes tomorrow. When he leaves your house your phone should be up and running, as regards the BB he will fit a modem and check that you have a connection, its down to you to set up your computer. In my opinion you have got yourself the best option, VM-BB and phone plus Sky tv, nice one.

Re: Dial tone

sounds lile you ordered a quickstart, which is the free option.
This is where VM send you a modem by courier and you plug it in yourself.

Instead of sending an engineer to do it for you and charging £30 for the privledge.

Usually a tech will arrive the day before the schedule date to connect your phone. Does not need entry to your property but may well check the wires in the omnibox (The box on the outside wall of your prop) and check it is connected to the green box around the corner.

You should have a dial tone by the time the courier arrives.
Well that s the theory anyway...

Re: Dial tone

Hmm, not a great start, nothing turned up and noone can tell me why or where it is!
The line was supposed to be active, but it isn't so Sky have to be re-booked and a Virgin engineer to come out tomorrow!

Re: Dial tone

Quickstart is for residents who live in a house where you can see a Telewest,NTL or Virgin Media Cable socket. If it doesnt then one needs to be installed. Otherwise your not gonna be able to connect everything up, furthermore,it depends how far away your computer will be from the socket,if you dont have wireless, then the quickstart option will give you coaxial cable at 1.5 metres which is quite short.

Cable Telephone lines(lines provided by Virgin Media) and other non-bt lines are disconnected completely from outside junction boxes presumebly to avoid phone fraud. Therefore, usually an engineer would need to visit to activate your phone service and generate a new phone number, once your line is active, you can test then line by dial 1502 if you live in an ex-C&W NTL area. Dial 1579 if you are in an ex-telewest area and this will also tell you your new phone number too(Your STD code such as 0161 may not be read out)

Also may I ask but why not take all 3 services? Because if you choose Sky for TV on top of Virgin phone, you may well be shedding out too much. Unless your using Sky for channels you cant get through Virgin such as Sky1 and Flaunt.

Re: Dial tone

When we moved house we had to have 2 engineers because the first one came and well didn't have to do much apart from fit a broadband point in the dining room because the living room was already cabled, then when he went he said he was going to the exchange to connect the phone and he would ring to tell us he had done it, didn't happen, was left with no dial tone still, only now when you rang the house you heard the calling tone but the phone didn't ring. So rang Virgin, sent an engineer explained there would be a charge if it was our equipment blah blah blah, engineer didn't turn up at the house BUT, got a phone call on the landline with the engineer saying 'Right, done it!' so obviously the first one had connected us up wrong.

So basically the moral of the story is the engineer needs to go to the exchange to activate the phoneline at the exchange (which in my case, the first one did but probably connected it up to the wrong house)

Hope this helps,
Ben

That's just damn lazy on the first engineers part, he should have come back from the green box to check your line, I hope that you mentioned this to VM.
