Phone Still Ringing Out When Engaged

Does anyone have this problem. When either my wife or myself are using the phone and another caller tries to ring they still get the ringing out tone and not the engaged tone.
I had this problem since I was with telewest and should of done something about by now but I am finally fed up with it.
Can it be easily fixed ?? is it a problem at the box in the street and who do you recommend I call -- Thanks for any replies

Is Call Waiting active on your line? Do you hear "beeps" during your call?

If Call Waiting is active on your line you will hear beeps during a call when someone else tries to call you. The person trying to call you will hear the ringing tone.

Call Waiting will work slightly different depending on the switch type at your local franchise. In Birmingham the incoming caller will hear the ring tone, in other areas they may hear a voice message saying that you are currently on a call and that they are trying to connect you.

Personally sounds like your line is knackered... Id just right 150 and get an engineer out!

I had the same problem for about a year.
Eventually I found out from an engineer that some areas don't fully support Call Waiting and the caller gets a ringing tone instead of the message "the caller knows you are waiting".
The caller thinks there is no one at home.
I reluctantly cancelled Call Waiting and got a rebate for period.

It isn't that some areas don't fully support Call Waiting, it's just that Call Waiting works differently depending on the switch type at your local franchise. System X switches give the message "Please hold the line whilst we try to connect you, the person you are calling knows you are waiting." The DMS switch just gives the standard ring tone - as do all of the mobile networks I have ever used.

Some years ago BT changed their systems so that incoming callers received a ringing tone instead of a voice message, so many people complained that they changed it to what it is today - two rings alternating with the voice message.

If Call Waiting is working correctly then obviously the subscriber will receive the bleeps whilst already on an active call.

Or alternatively you could add Free Voicemail which takes messages whilst your line is engaged. You should hear a stuttered dial tone when there is new messages.

To order or remove calling features simply dial 150 free from your Virgin phone. To report a fault, you might find it quicker to dial 151.
