NTL VS2000 home phone

Help!!!!

My disabled mother has a NTL VS2000 home phone system and is currently experiencing problems with it. When she receives incoming calls, the phone doesn't ring, but diverts straight to her answerphone. The manual is not much use to her, it doesn't seem to cover this problem. Thinking it might be her ringer settings, I checked, but her ringer setting is still set at an appropriate number of rings.

She did experience this same problem before, and thinking it was a line fault she called out Virgin. When the engineer got there, he quickly determined that it was a problem with the settings on her phone and sorted it for her, but didn't tell her what the problem actually was. So now it has occurred again, she is in the dark about how to fix it. (He did actually say that as he was called out to fix a problem that was handset related rather than a line problem he should have charged her for a callout fee, however he kindly waived this - I doubt she would be so lucky again)

Anybody got any ideas what she should do to solve this drama? Any help would be most gratefully received. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for that, unfortunately I don't live anywehere close by, and she is a bit of a technophobe, so wouldn't know where to start. (To be honest, I think she has got into this mess by mucking about with it in the first place)
