And anyway, when exactly did a loan become such a terrible thing? It is rather hard to get through life without taking at least one loan.

... well we've done the "responsible parent" bit to death recently, however the point is that this is not just a loan, but one secured on property, ie if you default on those "affordable monthly payments" you *lose* your *house*.
But when kids are constantly bombarded with the message that "if you can't afford something, borrow money", that does nobody any favours.
