Perhaps it would be a good idea if you knew what
you were talking about before you tar all the NTL tech staff with the same brush !!! NTL cable modems dont have an optical connection !
As for re-soldering what I am asuming is the rj-45 connector, Its users like you that squirt noise into the cable network and upset other peoples connections. The NTL modem does not belong to you and you have no right to tamper with it or take it apart.
Not all technical support staff are "stupid" perhaps you should try working in the technical support business yourself for a while to see how easy it is
