Windows XP - can't renew IP address

For the past couple of months I've been using an ethernet connection via a router to connect to NTL broadband. Last night, for no apparant reason, however, it stopped connecting claiming that the IP address couldn't be retrieved / renewed. I know there to be nothing wrong with the physical connection since I can access the same connection using Linux. It may have something to do with the fact that I contracted some kind of worm/trojan yesterday, although I think AVG got rid of that for me. I checked with IPConfig and my IP address began with something like 169....

This one's stumped me, some advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers,
Mike
