My personal favourite - good old Steve Gibson - click on 'Common Ports'

My browser is not happy about that site at all.I'm getting all sorts of messages about certificates.I'll be leaving it alone myself..

I'd believe Steve Gibson, personally, I wasn't too impressed that the hackerwacker page reported my IP as the NTL proxy server

Re: how to test my firewall
Im happy with the steve Gibson results but saying that the hacker one came up emtpy as well (If you choose to ignore the certificate errors)
What is it saying you are exposed to? Open ports?
Are you connected directly to the modem/STB or are you going through a router?

Re: how to test my firewall
Depends who you speak to
I was asking because if you have a router, they all tend to have basic firewalls installed and, unless you are using port forwarding, should drop any packets from the internet that you have not requested.
If you are getting results that you are not happy about, you need to have a closer look at your installed firewall and work with it until you are happy. Never good sitting there thinking your not secure!
I would always recommend defence in layers, so the more things people need to hack to get to you the better
Some might think its over kill getting a router for one machine, but there have been people suggest ones for £20. And thats less than a night out

Steve Gibson is a Marketing genius but sucks at security.
http://grcsucks.com/
Steve Gibson very cleverly words things but 'proper' security experts treat him with derision. He's a very clever marketing man, he should stick to that.
His 'tools' are picked apart with the newly invented bits of technology he re-invents as his own.
His warning on XP being the end of the internet certainly didn't come true.

Re: how to test my firewall
hi
please could you edit your link, it doesn't work with the extra http://
Other than that, I'd say it is always a good idea to try more than one test, but Steve Gibson reports my pc as 'stealthed', which concurs with a NAT router & ZoneAlarm Pro, so I think for a basic port scan, it does seem to work for me. Unlike some others, it, at least, reports my 'proper' IP & not the NTL proxy server
