Download Trojan

Hi all - i have a problem with Download Trojan in Windows XP. My Norton anti-virus has located a file infected with Download.Trojan in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ljhfe.dll, which can't be quarantined or deleted, even after disabling system restore and trying to delete in safe mode - being a windows file, its always in use and therefore inaccessible.

Does anyone know how to get rid of this without a clean install of windows?
I'd really appreciate your help

cheers
Si

Symantec Security Response encourages all users and administrators to adhere to the following basic security "best practices":

* Turn off and remove unneeded services. By default, many operating systems install auxiliary services that are not critical, such as an FTP server, telnet, and a Web server. These services are avenues of attack. If they are removed, blended threats have less avenues of attack and you have fewer services to maintain through patch updates.
* If a blended threat exploits one or more network services, disable, or block access to, those services until a patch is applied.
* Always keep your patch levels up-to-date, especially on computers that host public services and are accessible through the firewall, such as HTTP, FTP, mail, and DNS services (for example, all Windows-based computers should have the current Service Pack installed.). Additionally, please apply any security updates that are mentioned in this writeup, in trusted Security Bulletins, or on vendor Web sites.
* Enforce a password policy. Complex passwords make it difficult to crack password files on compromised computers. This helps to prevent or limit damage when a computer is compromised.
* Configure your email server to block or remove email that contains file attachments that are commonly used to spread viruses, such as .vbs, .bat, .exe, .pif and .scr files.
* Isolate infected computers quickly to prevent further compromising your organization. Perform a forensic analysis and restore the computers using trusted media.
* Train employees not to open attachments unless they are expecting them. Also, do not execute software that is downloaded from the Internet unless it has been scanned for viruses. Simply visiting a compromised Web site can cause infection if certain browser vulnerabilities are not patched.

Re: Download Trojan

Thanks for that. The symantec website says to try and delete the files from safe mode -but that hasn't worked - it still saya that the file is inacessible because it is being used (by Windows presumably!!)

Thanks anyway
Simon

unfortunately...yes, that's the sequence I tried!! Once I'm in safe mode it still says that the file can't be deleted.

thanks for your msg though

Re: Download Trojan

Try deleting via a command line, sometimes even having an explorer window open on the file is enough to lock it.

Re: Download Trojan

goto your start menu, choose run then type in command.com, press enter. you will now get a c:> prompt
this is what is known as a command line. Then type del C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ljhfe.dll
this should get rid (make sure all IE windows are shut)

if this doesn't work try the same in safe mode
(ahh the old days when you could just go into dos and remove these little beggars from the command prompt before windows latched onto them)

if it is Surfsidekick then look here for removal:
