Re: MS Updates today
I think there maybe a bug on this update that messes a few progs up. Update went okay and then two hours later Findfast (crappy office util I really should have dropped ages ago but am too idle) was doing its two hourly thing and wanted access to Verifyclass ID. Well, it's never asked that so I promptly denied it. I ran adaware just in case and when I exited that it also asked for access to Verifyclass ID. Nothing else has so far, so I think it may have been a glitch, but very annoying.
Findfast is now off my pc - I suppose some good came out of it.

Re: MS Updates today
I've only this week installed XP Home on my PC (was 98SE). After the initial install and activating my AV I thought I had downloaded all available Updates.
But last night when I went to Windows Update it downloaded and installed 37 patches !!

Re: MS Updates today
Unfortunatly cannot update from MS's site, i'm worried that my corporate edition install will be verified as fake because the comapy whose PC this once was is now bankrupt.
Ah well. I'll settle for being very careful online and most things shouldn't really bother me i hope. I have SP2 afterall.

Re: MS Updates today
You got XP Corp pre-installed?
No wonder you are worried it'll be detected as being fake.

I believe MS still provide security updates to 'hot' versions of their software on the basis it's better for all if they are patched. Even if you don't validate the cops won't be busting down your door.

Re: MS Updates today
Or download the MBSA, scan your machine with it and download the updates manually.
Or subscribe to the Microsoft security bulletin each month - which gives links to the articles and the direct download links to the patches. Two minute job to download and patch your system.
If you are going to use automatic updates, then make sure it's set to notify, or download but choose when to install them. I've seen lots of complaints on forums about the patch for Microsoft's patent battle, which means you've got to click on an activex control to make it work - even Flash or WMP controls - and the update for this appears to have been installed automatically, so novice users are a bit "wtf???" when they've got to click on the things to make it work properly.
So be careful if you don't want pushed updates to your machine to install automatically.
