Ten years ago, Microsoft did something significant about security..

Ten years ago yesterday (15/02/12), Bill Gates sent a memo.

Until that point, Microsoft had been regularly getting a pasting for their security measures, so this memo sought to address their security. There were also concerns about what MS was doing with our private data. This memo addressed that too.

It introduced Microsoft's "Trustworthy Computing" initiative.

The result of the memo? While Windows is not totally secure, it's security is much improved. Improved to the point where many of the current trojans and viruses exploit bugs in third party software (e.g Flash, AdobeReader and Java). Microsoft have also gone from treating security researchers like dirt to actively helping them and engaging with them, and it now actively partakes in things like attempts to take down botnets.

It's a change in attitude that others (thinking particularly of Apple here) would do well to consider.

BTW, before you say I am Apple bashing, I am not. I like Apple products. In fact, I have 3 Macs at home. I use an iPhone, and am considering getting a 4s or 5 when it comes out. I also mostly use Macs at work. I just think Apple could be a little more approachable.
