Anti theft software
A slightly misleading title as there is no such thing but I have read in the papers of software that can alert you when a stolen laptop/desktop is connected to the Internet by its MAC address.
The Police apparently can then locate it via the ISP as to where it is being used.
Has anyone used such on a PC? Anyone any comments on such software and where to buy it/rate it?
TIA

Re: Anti theft software
if they had the skills to wipe, rebuild or remove their trace from a system, I would imagine (and hope) they would have a job, and therefore not need to steal... not knowing how to format a drive doesn't make someone stupid. it just means they don't know how to do it and/or don't appreciate the benefits of doing it.

Most organized thieves and criminals aren't as stupid as you think.

I am thinking the opportunist. I would like to think that an organised criminal would not be targeting a laptop in my house.
I was thinking more along the lines of those who steal a laptop out of opportunity. The underclass "iniit" brigade who should have done better at school. Those that our society seems full of.
Thanks for the links. Will look at.

Re: Anti theft software
Actually the Lojack for Laptops embeds in the bios also, if the hard drive is removed and replaced, or the OS is reloaded, it redeploys when the machine boots and signals home.

True, but organised crime gangs don't go in for opportunistic nicking of laptops left on a table in Starbucks while their owner goes to refill their skinny mochachino. Such crimes are perpetrated mostly by brain donors in need of their next fix.

Re: Anti theft software
didnt a similar thing get attempted via the Bios when P3 chips came out but was then scrapped as they found it was possible to piggybank over this and get into the system.
