Microsoft Security Essentials

Not sure if this will help anyone but a couple of weeks ago I switched from Virgins AV to Microsoft Security Essentials.

My connection speed promptly went through the floor.

Everything buffered, sites loaded slowly and at one point the AV itself couldn't update because it couldn't connect.

I think Masque runs MSE (which is why I thought I'd give it a go) so presumably this may not be a problem for everyone. Indeed, it may be just me!

Whatever, I thought mentioning it might save someone from pulling their hair out

security essentials runs at an absolute minimum cpu and ram usage for everyone and usually doesnt cause any problems. it could possible have been the uninstallation of VM's pile of bull sperm that has caused you the problems

MSE works without any issues on my machine which is a Windows 7 Ultimate on a 32bit dual core.

For any security software to be effective it writes itself to a lot of places on your computer and will wrap itself around a lot of stuff. Frequently the uninstall routines leave bits behind. When you then install another bit of security software it overlays the esidual stuff. Electronic confusion reigns. I recently saw my laptop's effective boot to use time take over 1/2 and hour after changing some of the security stuff installed on it. I bit the bullet and completely wiped the thing to start afresh.

If you think that you need a clean removal of Virgin Security then call in and an agent will get you to run the removal tool.

I don't know if the RpsUU.exe file still works if you have been unable to uninstall successfully through control panel. You can get it HERE.

Many thanks for all your comments. I've taken MSE off and have gone back to VM AV. Things seem ok now.

I just can't be arsed with any hassle tbh. I got fed up of wet nursing computers ages ago. Now, I just want them to work. A dead give away is that I'm still running XP because it is stable, does what it is supposed to do and doesn't have all the bells and whistles garbage like gadgets and other unnecessary stuff.

When I uninstalled VM security it all seemed to go ok but who knows what's left lying around causing conflicts. Oh what fun...

No problems with MSE here. A solid 9.7 from my 10MB connection.

I've got MSE on all my network PCs here and I install it as standard on my client computers. It works.

Perhaps when I rang support they could have told me there was a DNS routing problem instead of blaming MSE. Perhaps too I could have been spared all that 'start your pc in safe mode' palava. Grrrrr.

Anyway, things are working ok now, I'm just gonna leave it alone although MSE does have a nice clean look to it.
