The definition has shifted over the years though, hasn't it.
The classic argument was that 'there aren't any viruses for the Mac'. 'No malware' is actually a very different proposition. Also, in this case the fake security software can't install itself; it still requires deliberate installation by someone with admin privileges.
I don't think anyone is claiming 'there's no malware'. Nevertheless, there's still a *lot* less of it affecting Mac OSX.
