Free AV comparison (not by a pro organization)

This is done by a guy who isn`t a professional tester or anything, he just does it as a hobby. He doesn`t claim the tests are in anyway scientific but they are quite interesting to watch if you like this kind of stuff.
It does show how pure AV technology can`t keep up with the amount of malware being spewed out!

Frightening really how much they all missed. Comodo seems the best out of the lot coupled with Malwarebytes ,which i always use anyway!
I did find though that Malwarebytes doesn`t play well with AVG Free or ESET.

Re: Free AV comparison (not by a pro organization)

mbam.exe seems to be detected as suspect by most of the firewalls and AV I've been trialling lately. The update server gets blocked too.

My old faithful kerio 2.1.5 couldn't cope when I installed a NAS and backup software si I have been finding a replacement. Online Armour was good but too intrusive and the bootup time got rediculous. PCTool Firewall and Sunbelt PFW both turned out to POS that couldn't remember what was allowed and what wasn't. Hehe! PCTools played up and decided to block my network so I disabled it. A few minutes later although disabled it blocked access to the Internet for my safety.

It's been dumped.

Trying Private Firewall now, so far so good.

PCTools FW and Avira AV seem to be doing the trick on my PC.

In fact on all 4 PCs here.

Strange isn't it.

I guess you just have to sort out what works on your own PC and then stick with it.

I have a buddy who swears by ESET AV. I tried it on my ACER laptop and it couldn't even complete a manual scan. ?? There was a monster thread about this over at Wilders. I don't think the issue was ever resolved. Then there was a spell of it failing to update and other gliche after gliche. Eventually I gave up and dumped it.

Anyway as I sit behind a router and only need a lightweight firewall to control outgoing. I've installed PrivateFirewall alongside Avira on both my machines and after turning off the bells and whistles in the Firewall it's working great. Small footprint, doesn't slow the system and seems ultra-stable.

A great firewall IMO or maybe I should just say "Works for me"

Re: Free AV comparison (not by a pro organization)

Did anyone get gazzumped by the AVG 64Bit debacle earlier in the week?

How an AV company can get not have simple checks in place for each OS is really above me. I mean it wouldn`t take long to check everything was fine!

If that's the case then:

For those who would still like to get rid of the annoying "NAG" window for version 5 update, do the following:

Disable the self-defense module.
Locate and rename the file "asw5Not2.exe". It should be located in the Avast4 folder.
Re-enable the self-defense module.
Extracted from an extremely long thread here...
