Security suite for a total beginner - recs?

My old dad is getting the internet

For the sake of us all, he needs a click about 3 times to install, set it going and forget about it, easy as falling off a log, zero techy talk, leave it at the defaults, internet security suite.

And it has to stop everything a stubborn, curious old dad might bring upon himself, viruses, firewall, spyware, phishing, sandbox, the works.

I'm thinking Kaspersky - does that sound about right?

If you go down the free route you could get AVG free, Avira and many others try http://www.majorgeeks.com/ as they do free and standard software.

Kaspersky is certainly not a bad choice, my old man had 2009 and the only thing he had any trouble with was the spam filter. Maybe also look at Avira http://www.free-av.com/en/products/5...ity_suite.html slightly better detection according to the "tests"

The trouble is once you start adding stuff like Sandbox`s, anti-this, anti that it does become confusing. What OS is he on, does he download much stuff and is he a reasonably safe surfer?
Is the default firewall and a free AV not going to cut it..

I want all the sandbox and suchlike stuff to be there but completely behind the scenes.

My ideal solution would be something that just asks 'which of these describes the way you usually use your computer?' and then just automatically sets up the whole set of tools in the background based on that single choice.

That's why I'm veering towards paid options like Kaspersky and yes, Norton.

He won't be downloading anything much really, but I don't think he'll be a safe surfer, he's almost never used the internet before and I just don't think he'll get concepts like phishing and firewalls. So that's why I just want a set it up once, using zero tech speak, and forget it option.

He'll be using Win7.

im still happy with microsoft security essentials. You install it update it and thats about it

If he's using Win7 64-bit you can't really sandbox it due to the kernel protection. This stops the low-level hooks that a sandbox needs.

Once you've got him set up it may be useful to make a disk image so you can roll back quickly when something breaks.

Not much more for 3 user license. Just make sure if you get KIS it`s not OEM as you cannot upgrade OEM to the next version released (only incremental updates)

Not quite on topic but worth risking a mention perhaps. Sandboxie has off-set this disadvantage by making 'Drop Rights' the default setting in the 64-bit version. This strips administrative rights from programs running in this sandbox. I believe the sandbox will still give pretty good protection with the addition of that. I don't know if that's the way Kaspersy's sandbox works though.

How about BitDefender?

and you can get three licenses..so your old man and you have same system..fairly easy to use..and not resource hungry
