We may be getting another PC shortly which will come with Windows 7 Home Premium. Currently this PC is using the XP firewall, Avast (free version) and Spybot and we've had no known security issues (touch wood). How reliable are the security features of Windows 7 and would we be able to employ a similar set up in the same way? Initially at least, the new PC won't be connected to the internet all that often as we'll continue to use this machine for that purpose.
Cheers.

OK - have been happy with the set up we have as even I can understand it (almost) lol

Win7 firewall is much improved on the XP version with bi-directional control and customisable rules. The interface is not exactly user-friendly but Sphinx make a nice front-end GUI. http://www.sphinx-soft.com/Vista/order.html
I've got Microsoft Security Essentials on my couple of 7 machines here and so far it's running well and has picked up a couple of test virus files successfully. I have to say I've not yet subjected it to a torture test by visiting any known infector sites so I can't speak for how well it will perform under those sort of conditions.
