He wanted to let others know of this "widespread vulnerability", which is why he,
Quote:
working with other experts*, has spent the past five months cracking the algorithm used to encrypt calls using GSM technology.
Obviously extremely vulnerable, then......

(* a few dozen, according to the article)

Re: Secret Mobile Phone Codes Cracked

The encryption used to 'protect' GSM communications has been known to be vulnerable to these sorts of attacks for a number of years, these vulnerabilities have allowed only those organisations with the money/power to leverage them (Governments, intelligence agencies both foreign and domestic, and large corporations) to interecept/listen in on our communications.

These latest revelations actually make it possible for just about anybody (a little technical knowledge and $30,000 dollars worth of kit not withstanding) to conduct these attacks.

At first glance this seems like a bad thing, and in the short term (hopefully very short term) it will be. In the medium to long term though this should force the operators of GSM technology to take better steps to protect our communications from everybody (including those organisations I mentioned before).

Re: Secret Mobile Phone Codes Cracked

What a load of ballooney. If you are that bothered about intercepting a phone call, then forget the A5 GSM encryption, the E1 microwave link from a base station is unencrypted so just sit yourself close to that.

The A5 algorithm is also in the public domain, so a very sad "no news day".

Next item please!!!
