AVG vs Antivir vs Comodo?

Hi all,

I'm now a bit fed up with AVG after realising that for some reason the realtime scanning part of the app causes my machine to take about a minute or more to boot up...
Reinstalled etc several times and still the same. I can have the app on my machine just with the realtime driver disabled on startup.
A colleague suggested Comodo was better than AVG but then again there's Avast's Antivir.

What's everyone's opinions on the 3 free AV programs?

Re: AVG vs Antivir vs Comodo?

I stick with AVG or Antivir, but prefer AVG, never had any issues with it that couldn't be solved by a reinstall or update

Re: AVG vs Antivir vs Comodo?

I dumped Zonealarm & AVG for the Comodo Internet Security suite. It seems to be working fine so far, picked up a couple of Trojans lurking in a zip file a friend (?) sent me.

I've installed it on my netbook (running Win 7 RC1) instead of AVG, too early to say if it's better or not.

Re: AVG vs Antivir vs Comodo?

If you go for Comodo Internet Security there is a bit of learning involved, allthough the pop-up situation has improved.
It depends what you wan`t. Do you wan`t just an anti-virus? if so Avira or Avast are probably the 2 best freebies(Avira does have the nag screen and the updates can be a pain).
CIS gives you the full Firewall, H.I.P.S + A.V. and i can tell you there are quite a few people who submit the latest threats to them daily. Also it includes buffer overflow prevention which is a bonus.
I`m testing our MSE at the moment, it seems great for a set and forget AV but they could do with working on the memory consumption while scanning.

Try a few and see which one suits you best, no AV will ever stop everything so it is probably wise to have 1 or 2 back up scanners for weekly/monthly scans.

Re: AVG vs Antivir vs Comodo?

Lots of problems with Comodo today, it was slowing the whole system to a crawl. The cmdagent.exe process was taking 99% resources. Booted into Safe Mode and removed Comodo completely. Back to AVG free & Zonealarm.

Re: AVG vs Antivir vs Comodo?

Free Avira/MS Essentials + Free Outpost Firewall + SuperAntiSpyware(not on startup).

Used to have Nod32(I believe i started using it following a thread on cableforum)+LooknStop. Then moved to Free Avira+LnS.

Have an old HP XP Home, Celeron 2.7 + 1Gb+256mb ram + 128mb ati radeon + 300 GB HDD. Finely tuned of course, boot to home screen within 15sec, with 21 processes running.
