Which security software to use?
Hi everyone I've just invested in my very first PC and would like some advice on the best security software to use. I'm not a novice I know its my first PC but I was a Mac owner for the past 10 years and security suites has never been a big thing with macs it was Norton AV or nothing. I'm currently using AVG free at the moment. Is this good enough or do the paying versions of which there are many do a better secure job. Any help would be greatly appreiciated. Thank you

Re: Which security software to use?
AVG is good enough run malware scans regularly with superantispyware and malwarebytes also perhaps once a month run a online virus scan to be sure http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
The most important security measure is careful browsing and good habits

Re: Which security software to use?
I'd say Avast for AV. It's free and works better than AVG imo.

If you're a VM customer I'd recommend PC Guard

Re: Which security software to use?
I thought it wasn't bad since the new one came out. I'm not waiting for a windows 7 one to come out so I can use it again

I am sure the new PC Guard uses Kaspersky as it's backbone and it is free to VM Customers and a huge improvement on the previous one

It does use Kaspersky but it uses version 6 as the basis which has now been superseded by version 7,2009 and now 2010.
That`s not to say it is bad as is seems to be an improvement over previous editions.
Currently using 1-> Comodo Internet Security, 2-> Online Armour/Avira, plus several back up scanners and Sandboxie or Geswall for testing.
@LSainsbury, How are you finding KIS2010? I did have 2009(OEM version) and couldn`t upgrade to 2010 so sacked it. They have it back in Aria now for a good price, do you find it similar or better to 2009?

KIS2010 is better than KIS2009 - the interface is a bit cleaner and easy to use.
I had a licenced copy of KIS2009 installed and upgraded that to KIS2010, however it did not recongnise my licence key becuase the copy I had was an OEM copy (got it cheap from eBay) and you cannot upgrade from an OEM copy.
Anyway, I had a friend whos childrens desktop and laptop were about to expire (I recommnded KIS2009 to them) and they were about to click the buy now button on the Kaspersky site (~£80) untill I told them you could get a 3 user licence in Tescos for £24.
Tesco's didn't have any so I wandered into PCWord (sic) and picked up a copy (£49.99) and took it to the till and asked if they would price match Tescos up the road. They checked the site (£24) and they did! Another result from PCWorld!
So we split the difference and I we now have fully licenced copies on 3 machines for another year.
Not had any issues with it yet! And I have confirmation from Kaspersky that when Windows 7 is released, there will be an update available.

Re: Which security software to use?
Thanks for that, the single user OEM is now ~£16 in aria so i might just go grab a copy, allthough the 2009 (3 user) upgrade route might be a better proposition, considering last time Kaspersky support was, lets just say not the best.
Glad the interface is clearer, 2009 was a bit messy.
Just another quickie, i wen`t to your site today for the first time and on the initial page you have the line "so i thought i`d have my name before somebody somebody nicked it!
Thought i`d mention it, nice site BTW
