Re: Free Microsoft Antivirus?
I bet it has tracking and reporting software and if it sees what it thinks is a blag O/S it freezes or locks your system, which would be fun if you have just had to reinstall the O/S for a genuine reason.
Good old Microsoft wanting to be Big Brother.

Re: Free Microsoft Antivirus?
It's free - and why should it not be as good (or better) than any of the other free ones?

It could be brilliant but how far would you trust it.

Microsoft and Antivirus should never be uttered in the same sentence. If this makes it's way to Windows Update as a "Security Update", I'll be complaining in the strongest possible terms to Microsoft as I wouldn't trust them to protect my PC at all!

I would not trust Microsoft to keep my PC safe either. I prefer other - More reliable - software and will be staying with what I have

I'd trust it as much as I trust any of the others - until it proved to me it didn't do the job it should

Re: Free Microsoft Antivirus?
Given Microsoft's rather lamentable history with all things security, I think I'd be tempted to give it a miss.
There is always the argument though that if anybody should know how to clean up a Windows OS after a viral attack it should be MS..........perhaps their time would be better spent preventing it happening in the first place though

Re: Free Microsoft Antivirus?
However, a similar argument goes with a such a high profile OS as Windows, people are always going to find the bugs that exist in any such system
Everyone always says that 'oh look at OS X/Linux' at being secure. There is a combination of better user account control (which Microsoft got hammered on when they tried to improve it in Vista) and lower usage
Until the day comes where Microsoft can dump all of the legacy code and start again, then Virus and Spyware protection is going to be needed

Re: Free Microsoft Antivirus?
Agreed, however.....
The vulnerability exploited by Conficker was in a patch than Microsoft released to fix an earlier vulnerability.
When the developers of your OS are releasing patch code that hasn't properly been checked.....then you know you've got problems.
Microsoft need to stop treating their paying customers like beta testers and start actually releasing products that are fit for purpose. They somehow manage to continue to release products that are not fit for purpose, which put our private data at risk, and which could potentially lead to losses of millions of pounds each time a new virus/worm is released, yet they very cleverly manage to avoid being held accountable for any of it.
Anyway, we're drifting away from the subject now.....as I said, I won't be letting any AV product created by MS anywhere near my computer.

Re: Free Microsoft Antivirus?
Morro is to be called: Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE).
Link: MSE
So - does this mean we won't need any other AV application?

Re: Free Microsoft Antivirus?
I can't see how Microsoft can offer this as part of a windows package. I can't see the EU, at least, being happy
Even to offer it as an add on download could be suspect, unless they also direct users to a number of alternatives. It's one of the few areas that there is a true independent software market.

I run a small office network around Windows Live Onecare and can say I'm very pleased with how the product works and protects the PC's within in it.
Each users laptop is always on and running smooth with regular backups, updates and tune ups completed without any interfearence to the user.
It seems to run in sync with Windows Vista very well and I can monitor the users laptops from anywhere I happen to be.
I will be gutted after next April when the subscription is finished. Thanks to Microsoft for Windows Live Onecare.
