XP SP3 coming..
Just a heads up, Microsoft is planning to release XP Service Pack 3 on Tuesday...
http://www.channelregister.co.uk/200...indows_xp_sp3/
No real new features, but if you roll the SP into your XP CD (either via command line, or via a windows customisation util like nlite), you'll no longer need to enter your key during setup. XP only needs the key when you activate it now..

Oh whoopee, I relish the thought of patching the work computers. Service packs don't roll out automatically via the update server

Well, it's a lot of reading, but Microsoft have a guide to deploying SP2 (the process hasn't changed, apparently) which may help you automate things a little..

Re: XP SP3 coming..
Does Microsoft have anywhere where you can download Windows yet? I am have a licence key from MSDN but the download program does not work! So either I need to shell out for a CD or download a copy of a newsgroup.
I would have rather download a safe and legal copy direct from Microsoft and enter my serial key (rolling back from Vista to XP)

But on an office network - I'm probably lucky only 15 PCs, plus a couple of laptops - download individually from the net isn't practical. Systems such as Windows Server Update Service is used. However Service Packs are best not rolled out automated, as they can mess with all sorts of stuff. Even a simple security patch can cause chaos.

If you have a full MSDN membership, you can log in to the subscribed area of http://msdn.microsoft.com and download it there.
If you got the key through a University/school membersship of the MSDN Academic Alliance, you can download it, but you'll need to find out the address from either your local MSDN Academic Alliance program administrator (a member of a school , college or Uni staff) or look up the institution on http://www.msdnaa.net

I have access to MSDN but that download program keeps coming up with an error
Quote:

Which means it's corrupt, but this happens everytime I download so either the downloader is broken or the file on the Uni servers are.

Re: XP SP3 coming..
I am the MSDN PA for my uni. Usually that error indicates a corrupted package. It might be an idea to report it to your msdn PA..

Re: XP SP3 coming..
XP SP3 is just a roll up package of current available fixes and couple of new patches which will probably be made available when SP3 is released.
Any point in installing it if you have a fully patched system?

Re: XP SP3 coming..
Well, seen as SP1 wouldn't install on my Vista lappy, then I'm not touching my lovely XP setups
