Re: XP SP3 coming..
I installed last night with (surprisingly) no problems although with some proir trepidation.
Installed via the MS Update (about 69MB) site in about 30mins all told.
Also downloaded and burned the .iso (545MB) for future use.
(PS: Sorry 'bout my other thread, didn't search properly)

Re: XP SP3 coming..
It seems to want to connect to the net whilst installing.
I wonder if it will go through if you were to install it offline.
Whilst I'm here, anyone know if LSA Shell (Export version), run dll as an app, windows nt logon application, services and controller apps, and also userinit logon application, can be disabled in zonealarm from accessing the net ?
many thanks,
halcyon.

Re: XP SP3 coming..
Is it a proper release - not a beta or anything? I've read that people are having a lot of problems with it, which made me think it wasn't fully tested yet Not letting it near my baby - not yet anyway

Re: XP SP3 coming..
well seems HP is to blame for some of them by using intel drivers on AMD machines. My XP box is a intel core 2 duo so I should be ok, and I am not upgrading my live system I am reinstalling XP fresh with SP3 integrated so in the event it goes tits up I have all my important stuff backed up anyway.

Re: XP SP3 coming..
I installed this on Wednesday with no problem. However I have since noticed that my ADSL download speeds have dropped to 10% of what they previously were! (usually around 3 MB/s but now 300 KB/s & only about 10KB/s when downloading email!) Upload speeds were unaltered at about 1MB/s.
I was going to complain to O2 but then thought I'd drop back to SP2 just in case, low & behold everything is back to normal. Has anybody else experienced this? I was wondering if it was a USB2 issue as I use a Thomson Wireless adapter in a USB2 port. I have read about people having data transfer speed problems when using external hard drives after loading SP3.

Re: XP SP3 coming..
Had a few issues installing sp3 and the problem was that i altered the boot screen to a different image via tune up program. All i did was revert it back to the original xp logos and was all fine.

Re: XP SP3 coming..
I updated to sp3 when it was on technet a while back and the only problem i've had with it is that it takes forever for the microsoft update page to load whilst searching for updates.

Could be tcp blackhole detection.
If you want to try SP3 again after installing it do this.
Open regedit.
goto
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Tcpip\Parameters
Look for EnablePMTUBHDetect
XP pre SP3 defaults to 0 (disabled)
Vista and XP SP3 default to 1 (enabled).
I have mine on and have noticed no significant impact but this is what it does.
Normally mtu discovery uses icmp packets to determine optimal mtu size on route, but some server admins and isps block all icmp traffic which breaks pmtu discovery. Microsoft developed a workaround with this which checks mss sizes (i think) until it sees a fragment which then finds the optimal size. I am using it but I can see it could slow things down at the start of downloads as it is doing more to determine the optimal mss/mtu size.

Crumbs - they've not turned all that guff on in XP SP3, have they
Turn off (set to 0):
EnableRSS

If they exist.
Regarding Windows Update - you can try adding the website to the Trusted zone in Internet Explorer. Also, you can reset the cache - stop the Automatic Updates service (in services.msc), then empty the contents of C:\windows\SoftwareDistribution Start the service.
