Which anti virus and spyware software to choose??
Hello!
My Norton Antivirus is due to expire tomorrow, so I'm looking to get some new antivirus....only problem is I'm not exactly knowledgable in the field!
Can anyone recommend which one I should get and where I can get it?
Also whilst I'm here, can anyone recommend any anti spyware? I did have Spybot and Adaware, but I've been told these are not very good?
Any help appreciated!

Re: Which anti virus and spyware software to choose??
Hi,
Norton used to be good but now i personally feel that its a waste of space, its a memory hog and does not detect as much malicious code as it used to.
For the best free anti virus i use AVG Free, for premium use Nod32 which i use and its excellent.
Fore spyware removal, adware and any other form of malicious code i use, adaware se, spybot s&d & a-squared free.
I also use a program called ccleaner which hels to speed up your pc.
Oh, and whoever told you that adaware & spybot are not very goods apps, is insane, they are the best apps i have used and i have been using computers for 10 yrs now.

Adaware used to be excellent. The latest one is a disaster. It installs a file called Adaware Service which runs all the time and soaks up a huge slice of memory, even when you are not running the program. In the past I have always used it.Unless they do something to stop it being such a resource hog I would strongly advise against installing it now. I have totally removed it from my computers.
AVG Free is as good as most, and costs nothing.

The Adaware service does not use loads of memory. I've used this program on thousands of machines without the problems you have experienced. It is most likely that it did not install correctly, i've seen it a few of times, but that's the exception not the norm. It's not the best out there, but it is still ok.

I wouldn't go near *any* suite with a barge pole.
A suite is normaly antivirus, antispyware and firewall.
Just because a company does one a good job at removing virus removal, does not mean they will do a good job at removing spyware or implementing a firewall.
Stick to seperate applications, you will have much greater control and security that way.

I suggest you try pressing control, alt,del ;open task manager, select processes and take a look at how much memory aawservices.exe is using before making that statement.I would also suggest anyone following your advice and installing Ad-Aware 7 do what I suggest before deciding to keep it.
I too used it on several machines prior to it's present one. The old ones were excellent .This one is a hog. You are of course welcome to your own opinion. I was giving mine.
I find it hard , however to believe the "thousands of machines"!A case of don't spoil a good story for the sake of the truth?

Kaspersky Internet Security, I find I don't need anything more. It is of course a decision by who is the user. Some like one and others swear by another. All the good ones give you a free trial, so try them and see which you like best.
