IP Tracking

When your registered on a forum and post the admin can read your IP, but how does someone know your IP if it's not open for all to see on another forum if they are not admin?

I ask because this has happened to me.

Is it down to some sort of software?

I'm not comfortable with what this person is doing.

Re: IP Tracking

The most common way is via something in their signature.

The signature usually contains a picture/image which they host on their own server, or on a server to which they have access. When your browser requests that picture from the server it will record the IP address that requested it.

They would need to know exactly who (of the many people viewing the thread) was requesting the image at that time otherwise they wouldn't be able to link it to specific individuals.

Anyway. Every page you visit records/knows your IP address, regardless of whether it displays it or not. If you don't like that then there are ways that you can mask it (none of which I'm going to discuss here, for various reasons), but I wouldn't rely on any of the being foolproof.

Besides, what is it that they're doing that you're 'not comfortable' with?
