norton 2004 not updating

norton antivirus 2004 windows xp

my problem started back in feb, norton live update had always worked fine, then i started to have a warning come up saying that my virus def were out of date. so i ran live update, even though it does it auto. when i ran it it said that everything was up to date , but it was still saying in the main window that virus defs were out of date and the date was showing that it had updated about 3 weeks previously. so after fiddling and searching i went to this page http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...eg=hho&src=hot and used the tool to update. this worked! the next week when it was due to update, nothing happened again, so i looked at this page http://www.symantec.com/norton/secur...efinitions.jsp and it showed that there were new defs to update and my live update still hadnt updated, so i went through the same procedure again. halfway through the week live update updated itself without me doing anything, and changed the date itself, even though it wasnt on the usual weds or thurs that it updates itself. i have been doing the same thing evey week since then.

the only thing i can think of that happened is on the time calander on windows tool bar i checked a date on the calander to see what a date was a couple of months ago. i checked on norton and it said one of the reasons why update stops working is the wrong time and date, so i went through all the advice clicking apply and ok, highlighting the correct time year month etc, even using the windows timeupdate so it syncronised the same as the internet, but still no joy!

every time i manually use live update it always goes through the same downloading catalog 1-24 with no error messages, saying all is up to date. but the number of catalogs never changees should they? i look in windows explorer-all prog-shared-symantec-defs- and the new virus defs that i download of symantecs internet page are always there, i am worried though that perhaps all is not well.

i know most people think that nortons crap and i should just uninstall it but my subscription is good till august. i cant reinstall it cause it was already installed on the pc, and i have just been paying for subscriptions. can anyone else shed any light on this? would be really grateful thans from jane

Re: norton 2004 not updating

Is your disk drive nearly full? Norton uses quite a bit of space to extract the downloads. Maybe that, although it can download the data, it can't extract it properly.

Re: norton 2004 not updating

You could try uninstalling (Google for the Norton removal tool) and reinstall. But prepare for a few updates / reboots!

On the contrary: Avast Antivirus is free, and frequently scores better in Anti Virus software roundups than a lot of paid for software, including Norton.

The new 2007/2008 versions are excellent actually.
Though I do agree they were bloated rubbish with the 2003-2006 versions.. getting progressively worse.

Re: norton 2004 not updating

Hi Jane !!!

I have some contacts at Symantec and for your problem they told me that Symantec has identified an issue with Norton AntiVirus 2004.
So you have to contact Norton Support - the agents will be able to advise you on the issue. Alternatively, you can run LiveUpdate manually via http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...98082013035306 but they added that it is strongly recommended going through a support agent if you run Windows XP.
