full disk encryption

hi guys

i am interested in full HDD encryption. someone recommended DriveCrypt PlusPack, from securstar they said it's very reliable and it could meet my needs. i was wondering if any of you knew about this encryption software and if you could give me some tips and advice on it.

what got my attention about this software was the bootauth feature that it has , it's a pre-boot autenthification system.

I'd be very warey of encrypting your boot drive simply because if a HD starts going wrong normally then it's pretty bad but you can back-up your data, however because of the nature of encryption, it's more easily corruptable and if the sectors that contain the software get destroyed, you stand even less chance of recovering your data! That's my take on it anyway, I'd stick with File/Folder encryption if I needed it at all.

I use the freeware Truecrypt - http://www.truecrypt.org/ to create a virtual encrypted disk.

Zeph - you said "I'd stick with File/Folder encryption if I needed it at all." and thank you for your opinion, i appreciate it. as far as file/folder encryption, the securstar people have a software called DriveCrypt that is specifically for encryption files or folders, actually it encrypts your data by putting it in a container that you create, i am familiar with this software. i do want full disk encryption though and i am aware of the fact that i should do it only if i truly needed it; again thank you!

Delta Whiskey - thank you also for your suggestion. i don't think that TrueCrypt has the same features as DriveCrypt PlusPack, i also don't think that it would fit my needs, i don't know much about this soft but i do know that it doesn't have the bootauth feature that i find very good; thanks a lot anyway!

I beg to differ - Truecrypt 5.0 does offer full disk encryption with preboot auth. I can't comment on Drivecrypt as I haven't seen it, but I know the Truecrypt team have done a good job on 5.0. IMO - little point paying for a product if there is an open source equivalent.
