PC Guard
I have had PC Guard installed on three home PC'S, two desktops and a laptop the two desktops have the same specs but it works fine on one and gives problems on the other. The laptop is not as powrful as the desktops and in the reviews I have read PC Guard uses lots of resources so maybe that is the problem on that one, fair enough, But what I would like to ask is WHY do Virgin not sort this out, all reviews I have read are negative, ie PC Guard lets some virus's in, hogs resources ect (sorry I think I have read one good review) after all this is a massive company and although it is a free programme it is no good having a free programme that does not work efficiently.
Well I have let off steam here I will now go and unistall PC Guard AGAIN and use AVG, and free spyware software, lol

Re: PC Guard
Yes, NEVER use PC Guard!! Other free alternatives are availible!
And to answer your question, Virgin have not sorted it out as they know that WE the paying customers will have to spend MORE money to call up their pointless premium rate call!

Re: PC Guard
Yup, that's the best choice.
PC Guard is outsourced to some other company, so it probably went to the cheapest bidder. VM just want to be able to say "we offer all this free stuff", it doesn't really matter if it's actually any good.

Too true there, just take their network for example, hence why STM was introduced, so they can spend the MINIMUM amount of cash on upgrading and the top bosses just sit on their asses and get paid extra for more ideas on how they can screw (MOST) of us over

Re: PC Guard
Hi,
I'm new to the forum. Found it in a search for info on PC Guard!
Issue I have is why it insists on a reboot every time it updates. My machine is very slow on booting up (upto 10 mins) and to have to start all over again after making my cup of coffee is anoying in the least.
I became very wary of other "free" firewalls, anti virus/spyware progs when I discovered little additional packages, usually adware, on my machine. Assumed as PC Guard was included with NTL they would have a vested interest to protect their network. I just stayed with it when VM took over.

Re: PC Guard
I liked parts of PC Guard like the free parental access, private protection etc
But after a wee while It started to screw around with my system. Mainly refusing to fully boot up at start and crashing out, this after a few fresh installs. It also doubled the length of my boot up. Sometimes it just froze on updates and needed a system restore.
Once i swapped over to other products, boot speeds much, much faster and no crashing out on boot.
Sad to say though i did give it a try, the product is far from perfect. If it became more reliable i'd go back.

I am using it and find it protects my pc very well.
Having Norton on laptop and used Sophos it is hardly resource intensive. Try using these bloatwares and you will know what resource intensive is.
Steam uses more resources than PCGuard.
You probably need to reboot your PC as it requires the services to stop and restart Norton etc all do this as well. Usually when parts of the engine are updated.

Re: PC Guard
I also found Norton really slowed down the computer and MacAfee is not much better.
I have never had any problem with anti-virus from NTL and VM except I do not use the firewall as it stopped the computer to computer wireless network working. Mine certainly does not reboot every time it updates and is certainly far less resources intensive than Norton or MacAfee

Re: PC Guard
I agree Norton etc also require reboots when the engine has been updated. But for it to be required practically every day is a bit excessive!
