Virus removal help/odd malware behaviour

Hi all,
Hoping for some assistance here if possible, got a mates pc which im trying to clean up for him. It's running XP MCE and has been infected with amongst others trojan:monnet

Ive done hijack this scans and removed all the nasties I can see, sys restore is switched off and I have run a full scan with Avast home edition which has been updated

Windows defender (after updating) found four further nastys which have been removed.

Im currently running a onecare live scan on the box.

However, with all the steps I have performed I am left with one very odd piece of behaviour. That being that after logging onto the box that the icons and start bar will dissapear almost as if there is something killing the explorer.exe process.

To further complicate matters Im using a remote desktop session to connect to the machine as I dont have any spare keyboards/monitors available.

Anyone help please ??

Thanks,

If a computer has been that badly infected the chances of recovering a stable system are very slim, I would back-up any personal data and re-install Windows.
