PCguard & PCguard total

Hi all

I have 4mb broadband via Virgin cable services

To be honest I am not over impressed with my Norton 360 and I am thinking of swapping to free PCguard total as I am on 4mb

Does anybody use PCguard orPCguard total, and what do you think of them?

I do not want to use PCguard or PCguard total if they kidnap your pc with lots of adverts/ toolbars, etc etc

Also - is the technical support any use?

Any comments please?

Many thanks

Re: PCguard & PCguard total

There is plenty of discussion about PCguard in these forums, but not much of it positive about its merits!

I suggest you do a search for "PCGuard" using the forum search facility.

Re: PCguard & PCguard total

Well I have had to go onto PC Guard Total, mainly for it's Parental Guard, now having a ten year old in the house, who is as trustworthy as "Atila the Hun" when using the internet.
Before I was using Avast for virus scanning and Zone Alarm for firewall. As i was the only net user in the house. Both excellent packages for my uses, but no parental Guard.

PC Guard Total does work, but I highly advise you to turn the scheduled tasks off! It's a pain in the butt, when your working on the PC or watching a dvd when it kicks in.
It installs fine, and has to be activated to check your a VM customer.

A few flaws, as mentioned, the scheduled tasks, but two major ones.
1: It sometimes does not boot up properly on startup and a PC reset is in order. roughly 1 in ten times I boot up this happens.

2: and very important if your a Firefox browser user, when FF updates you do need to switch everything on PC Guard Off. Otherwise you get the message "you may not have permition to change the files" and firefox gets stuck in a loop. This is from info on Firefox forums are mainly a "version 2.0.0.11" problem that auto updates and doesn't give you the choice. Earlier versions are A OK. So if it happens, just temp turn it off, and FF update runs as normal.

If i had my way I personally would have stuck with ZA and Avast. I am not certain how good the virus definitions are on PCG compared to other products. Others could advise better.
I haven't yet had any warnings off PCG Total about inbound access to my pc, Zone Alarms would warn me, and give the IP attempting to access.

If your using IE for a browser the pop up blocker is a good essential addition, also the clear private data and privacey apps are good.

Read a bit more about it on these forums to see what other users experiences are. I hear some are good others not so. I'm just adding my pros and cons I have disscovered over the past two weeks with it.

Re: PCguard & PCguard total

I tried it but reverted to my previous usage as I found it interfered with much that I tried to do, many pages not loading unless parts of the package were disabled temporarily. Some would not load even then. Avg plus Zone alarm , for all their quirks, seem to me to be a better option, and cost nothing.
Spyware Doctor(an Adware killer), though not free ,seems a reasonable alternative, and comes with "free " antivirus and firewall in asmuch as you pay for one and get the others with it.However, I found having to disable the Onguard part of it whilst downloading/ installing some program updates a definate turn off.
All I would say is I would avoid Norton products like the plague. Once you install them they are next to impossible to remove when you get fed up of their takeove tactics.
