wireless router security and vista

Got my sister a new laptop and she plans to use adsl via wireless on it.

I have 2 wireless routers here and when I was downloading security patches etc. I noticed only one of the routers was able to connect, the 2nd wasnt even visible but thought little of it.

Now at her house she has her netgear sky wireless router and we are able to connect to it normally over wired ethernet, the wireless picks up the router but when trying to connect to it there is a large delay before it asks for the security key then another large delay after entering before it says failed, it doesnt go into much detail as to why it fails.

The router defaults to WPA security and allows WEP so I then tried WEP which is also the same problem, I havent tried no security yet but obviously we dont want the router broadcasting with no security.

Anyone here using secured wireless on vista and know of these type of problems? am I doing something obviously wrong sorry if I havent gave much detail, the security key I am using is defenitly correct.

ive used a laptop before now with the conenction at work which is WPA protected, it didnt take that much time for the connection process iirc

what encryption is the laptop wireless able to use and what is set on the router?

I would try removing the key from all devices and then changing it to something new. Possibly resetting the router to its factory defaults along the way.

It could be something's just got mixed up in the router, a full reset might sort that out.

no idea what the laptop supports, I think it should support both considering vista is a new OS but cannot choose which to use when connecting, I assume vista is just detecting it.

I agree it been slow doesnt seem right at all, when I had it working here on my router it connected quite fast. I will try resetting the key to something else when I go down next which be this weekend.

For now I have given up.

The wireless I managed to get to work but seems random, when it does work it loses connection after a short time. My sister also took it to the IT department where it works and they couldnt get it working. I have also updated the wireless drivers.

Same with vista fw off and without no wireless security.

Conclusion either vista or the wireless hardware isnt working properly.
