Spyware making Text into 'Sponsored Links'

Hi,

Anyone know of any new spyware type stuff that turns standard text to links?

Someone I know seems to have a bit of a problem with it at the mo - I've done ad-aware, spywareblaster and Ewido Security Suite which I saw recommended on a site (it does look quite good!) but still getting the links.

One this that was proving hard to get rid of was Maxifiles Toolbar, and I think bits may still be around...

I though WhenU did something like this, but I've got rid of that. Any ideas of anything else?

If you have SP2 take a look at Tools --> manage add-ons in IE6. May well be a dodgy BHO in there somewhere.

Also get the MS anti spyware Beta from the MS site and run that.

Have you run the scans in Safe Mode?

Also worth running them in every account that's on the system (assuming their are multiple user accounts).

Yeah, looked in there and turned off any suspect ones, that stopped some pop ups, but still get the odd one and these links

Yeah, there are multiple users but only one of them seems to get used!

Where it's had difficultly removing them, I've done it in safe mode...
Unfortunatly, It's not mine, and it might be a while till I get back on it - I can pass messages though!!

They have Mcaffe Security Suite as well, which I have to say I'm not too impressed with, in much the same way as I'm not impressed with Norton Internet Security - they all try to do too much!

Re: Spyware making Text into 'Sponsored Links'

Do you see this only on some websites?

I do know there is an ad service from Vibrant Media called IntelliTxt that some sites use, and this turns text into links, I think it puts double0lines under the words, and you get a little pop-up when you hover over the link.

Here is an example of a site using IntelliTxt:
http://www.jsifaq.com/SUBA/tip0000/rh0000.htm
You should see words like Windows NT and Microsoft as green links.

It's done as javascript running on the page, nothing on your PC as far as I know.

Yep seen it on other sites and forums, if the OP were to give a link to a site they are seeing it on we would know for sure.
