Mugly.I Virus - stupid damn thing
Hi Everybody, I am using a different PC but am having trouble trying to remove that virus from my home PC.
Its the Mugly.I Virus, Trend micro internet security 2005, noticed it 2 days ago, but was unable to delete or clean it, I went to their website to see how to manually remove it, but the solutions posted do not help, there is no registry files called dllman.exe in my registry; nor do the downloads help.
I can halt internet activity which stops all incoming and outgoing traffic because the virus constantly downloads stupid other programs that all come up with Virus' attached to them that can not be cleaned, but can be deleted.
I'm running winXP SP2, with all the latest virus definations and updates for the Antivirus program.
can anyone else help?

Re: Mugly.I Virus - stupid damn thing
Have you tried cleaning it from Safe Mode? You probably need to attack it while it's not running.

Re: Mugly.I Virus - stupid damn thing
I have not yet tried it in Safe mode, but i disabled all the start up programs in MSCONFIG, still happens from there.
I forgot to mention, that when Internet activity is stopped, and a virus scan is completed, it does not see, or can not find any virus'. As soon as I turn on my internet connection, it detects it straight away.
the registry will not open either. i manually have to browse to the folder and open it up from there.
Task Manager will not open at all, but I downloaded a program that lets me see which process' are running, and there is all these mad programs, that I never even heard of.

Re: Mugly.I Virus - stupid damn thing
I can't find the "I" variant of the virus on Symantec's antivirus web page but I expect the removal instructions will be very similar or the same as the other variants, see here....

Re: Mugly.I Virus - stupid damn thing
Removing most nasties from msconfig will have no effect - they check if they have been removed and put themselves back again. Virus scanners won't be able to delete files in use by the virus(es) because the files are locked. Safe mode is usually the way to go. Strange that no one has written a scanner that ignores/breaks the lock.

Re: Mugly.I Virus - stupid damn thing
I Have tried running in safe mode, but my antivirus programs gives some wierd settings andwill not run.
I left it on Last night and checked it this morning and there was No EXAGERATION HERE but tens of thousands of small programs installed all of the folders in Desktop, system folders, documents, all over the place.
Everytime I try deleting and removing them, they keep reappearing almost instantly
Really is a head Banger, will probably have to flatten it

Re: Mugly.I Virus - stupid damn thing
Google for "stinger". Download it and try that in safe mode.

Re: Mugly.I Virus - stupid damn thing
Maybe it's time to back up files, boot from the XP CD and format and install a fresh copy of XP? Sometimes it's quicker and more effective than spending 2-3 days chasing a virus, expecially if you can't get your AV software to play ball in the first place.
If the AV is stopping your from booting to safe mode in a state where you can run a removal tool have you tried removing your AV completely and trying safe mode again?

Re: Mugly.I Virus - stupid damn thing
If your AV is preventing you from running (and cleaning) it properly in safe mode, perhaps it's time to consider getting shot of it and getting a proper AV in.....

Or it could be that the virus is shutting down the AV processes, many viruses do this as part of their MO. May not be the fault of the AV program here.
