Question wuident-what is it?

Hello,
In Windows/Software_Distribution... I've got alot of "wuident" entries- is it kind of virus or malware?
Where can I get some information about that "Windows/System32" directory,i.e. what there should be and not? I know that files such as mdm.exe or lsass.exe if they are not in Windows/system32 then they are viruses aren't they?
And when I download some shareware applications (Registry Mecanic or Registry Cleaner, etc.) the "WhenU" malware makes self-install on my PC. How to fight it and stay "safe"?
Thanks in advance
kedaxx

Re: wuident-what is it?

windows update ident files maybe?
If you don't know what an entry if for and can't find any information on it I would strongly suggest not manually "optimising" you registry

So I'm thinking they are files related to Windows Update, possibly holding information on the your settings for Windows Update itself (language etc)

Re: wuident-what is it?

They do appear to be Windows Update files.. At least, they are on my machine.

kedaxx: As Paul says, if you are not sure what you are doing, don't manually alter the registry. You can totally destroy your windows setup if you alter/delete the wrong thing.

If you are concerned about spyware, make sure you have installed good anti spyware software, such as the four I use:
Microsoft's AntiSpyware (http://www.microsoft.com/athome/secu.../default.mspx),
Lavasoft's Adaware (http://www.lavasoft.de),
Javacool's Spywareblaster & Spyware guard (http://www.wilderssecurity.net)
and Spybot (http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html)

All are free. Adaware (in it's free version) will not automatically protect against spyware, so you need to scan your system with it regularly. Spybot & Antispyware help protect your system and can scan it. Spywareblaster and Spywareguard both prevent installation of spyware in the first place. Spybot and Antispyware do this as well.

Failing that, if you suspect a piece of software is giving you spyware, don't install it.

Re: wuident-what is it?

Searching via Google, it does appear to be a windows update related file, perhaps meaning "Windows Update Identifier" something or other...

Nothing points to it being harmful.

Don't worry, you can always ask a forum team member to close it
