Thumbs down Norton Anti-Virus not detecting viruses

Im currently running NAV 2002 Pro and it doesnt seem to be picking up the viruses on my machine. I scanned with that trend Micro online scanner that picked up 5 objects, but i would have had to have paid for it to remove them. Ive got AVG 7 Free Edition running on my system as well as NAV and it has already picked up 2 viruses. So why isnt Norton picking them up? Do you think its time to give Norton the shove?

Re: Norton Anti-Virus not detecting viruses

I recently stopped using Norton 2005 (after using it for 5 years ), I got sick of it's resource hogging and the bloat of the program.
I also had the same situation as you where Norton didn't find viruses and Housecall did.

Free online anti-virus scanners.

Hmm, nothing new in this thread.

I could be back in 199x & still read the same

Maybe it is time to look for better protection than Norton.

Take a look at Avast also, not a bad free program at all.

Indeed, the GUI is a bit annoying, but its range of features is not to be sniffed at

Angry Re: Norton Anti-Virus not detecting viruses

I downloaded Avast. It found 9 items

I had been using Norton Internet Security 2004 and it let them through.

Needless to say that I've now uninstalled NIS 2004.

Re: Norton Anti-Virus not detecting viruses

Hi everyone,

As geminian68 has said Norton AV does hog quite a lot of system resourses. (you should see how much NSW uses!)...However, depending on your system resourses and spec to start with, I have NEVER had a problem with this product snce I started using it in 2001.

So, I would be intreseted in some of your system specs.
I have AMD 64 3400+ (2.4GHz)
1024Mb RAM

I am aware that it may be more than some, I have NEVER in all my time had to "Quarantine" my PC for a "Virus" attack.... If I'm really lucky then.....I'm really lucky and I'll thank my lucky stars.

P.S. I have both NSW 2005 and NISP 2004.... no I DON'T work for Symantec!!!

Re: Norton Anti-Virus not detecting viruses

Just installed my old copy of Norton Personal Firewall 2002 to go with avast and it seems a lot less resource hogging.

The thing with Norton Internet Security is that you can't get rid of just one thing, it's all or nothing.

Hi piquet41

I recently stopped using NIS 2005 after using Symantec for 5 years since 2000 I have used most of their products (AV, NPF, Systemworks, Utilities, CleanSweep, Ghost, PC Anywhere, CrashGuard, Partition Magic*) (*since they have taken over PowerQuest), When I said I got sick of it's resource hogging I meant when I did a virus scan it used an awful lot of CPU & Memory.

I also had the same situation as Wayne A, when Norton didn't find viruses and PC-Cillin Housecall's online scan did.

I now use BitDefender 8.0 Professional* which is similar to NPF(*AV, Firewall, Anti-Spam) which doesn't seem as hogging of resources and unlike Norton it doesn't require activation.

I have AMD XP3200+ (2.2GHz)
1024Mb PC3200 Dual Channel DDR RAM

P.S. I have:
Norton Antivirus 2005 Corporate Edition
Norton Antivirus 2005 Pro
Norton Internet Security 2005
Norton Systemworks 2005
Norton Ghost 2005
Partition Magic 2005.... and no I DON'T work for Symantec either.

Well my 1000th post and surprise surprise it is still a request for help

Hi, from the 3 links you post above I have clicked onto them but get the following.

From the Bit Defender Link –

Pops up a licence agreement
I click on I agree
Then an Internet Explorer Security Warning Box
Then I click install and get the following error –

Failed to load interface, you must have admin rights or IE set to medium.

I am Admin on this PC and IE is set to Medium.

From the Housecall Link –

Get Internet Explorer Security Warning Box
Then I click install and nothing happens
The box that should populate with the drives just shows empty with a red cross in the top left and nothing happens

I then click on the FAQS and get this error –

HouseCall Frequently Asked Questions

[LM/W3SVC/4/pc_housecall/faq_include.asp]

From the Panda Software Link –

I click on scan your PC
New window opens and click onto next and enter an email address
Then I click onto send
An Internet Explorer Security Warning Box Opens
I then click Install and get the following error –

An error has occurred downloading Panda ActiveScan. Please repeat the process. If the error occurs again, restart your system and try again

I would appreciate any advice on what maybe stopping these from running.

I currently run XP Pro using NAV 2004 with Kerio Personal Firewall free version.

I have downloaded Avast successfully but as yet have not installed this as I need to know if this will run alongside NAV2004.

Appreciate any advice.

Thanks
